Anti-dumping initiations in Indian manufacturing industries / Bagchi, Sagnik; Bhattacharyya, Surajit ; Narayanan, K   Article
Bagchi, Sagnik Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract Anti-dumping as a new protectionist trade policy has evolved as the popular strategy choice for the trading nations. Since the Uruguay Round of World Trade Organization (WTO) (1994), India has been a prominent user of it. This article attempts to explore the possible factors that might have triggered off 90 percent cases of anti-dumping by five major Indian manufacturing industries over the period 1997–2011. We construct a balanced panel combining data on anti-dumping initiations from the ‘Global Antidumping Database’ with trade data from the Directorate General of Commercial Intelligence and Statistics (DGCI&S)-India and United Nations Comtrade database at the Indian Trade Classification (ITC) based on Harmonized System (HS) two-digit level. Having count data, the empirical model is estimated initially through a random-effects Poisson regression model followed by a negative binomial model. The number of anti-dumping initiations in India is dependent on the value of imports, the presence of a dominant industry lobby and the retaliatory behaviour by the affected domestic firms, among some others. In fact, we find that in determining the number of anti-dumping initiations the conventional economic and foreign affairs policies take a backseat!

Luthje, Boy Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2013.
Summary/Abstract This paper develops a new approach to analyse labour relations at the level of companies, industries, and regions in China. Referring to Western and Chinese labour sociology and industrial relations theory, the author applies the concept of "regimes of production" to the context of China's emerging capitalism. This article focuses on China's modern core manufacturing industries (i.e. steel, chemical, auto, electronics, and textile and garment); it explores regimes of production in major corporations and new forms of labour-management cooperation, the growing inequality and fragmentation of labour policies within the modern sectors of the Chinese economy, consequences for further reform regarding labour standards, collective bargaining, and workers' participation

Wage–productivity relationship in indian manufacturing industries: evidences from state-level panel data / Jain, Hansa   Journal Article
Jain, Hansa Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract Indian manufacturing industries have experienced the major effects of economic reforms. Since the effect of any policy is ultimately transferred to workers, this article is an attempt to determine the extent to which labour productivity and wages are inter-related in manufacturing industries. The study uses state-level panel data of manufacturing industries and empirically tests the relevance of marginal productivity theory of wages and efficiency wage theory. After confirming the stationarity of the series, various empirical tests such as cointegration, vector error correction mechanism and Granger causality are applied to check the long-run equilibrium relationship between wage growth and productivity growth.
