House of cards?: India's rationales for contributing to UN peacekeeping / Hansel, Mischa; Möller, Miriam   Journal Article
Hansel, Mischa Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2014.
Summary/Abstract India has always been a major troop contributor to UN peacekeeping missions. In recent years, however, the benefits of these efforts have been increasingly questioned by some of the country's strategic elites, as are some of the guiding norms of contemporary peace operations. This article scrutinizes the contemporary and historical plausibility of both ideational and materialistic explanations of India's comprehensive peacekeeping engagement. Against this backdrop, it provides an estimation of the likelihood of a future Indian retreat from these efforts. Our conclusions are neither reassuring nor alarmist. Status and economic considerations, normative disagreements, and growing frustration with the stalemate of UN reforms all complicate India's peacekeeping policies. Neither of them, however, unambiguously hints at a complete withdrawal.

UN Security Council Resolutions as factors of international soc: the case of Hezbollah / Dionigi, Filippo   Journal Article
Dionigi, Filippo Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2014.
Summary/Abstract This paper shows how UN Security Council resolutions can facilitate the international socialization of an Islamist political actor. The study undertakes a process-tracing analysis of the negotiations and attempts to implement UNSC Resolutions 1559 and 1701 and then assesses their impact on Hezbollah's agency and political identity. The author argues that UNSC resolutions can inform processes of social influence that directly affect the activity of non-state actors and then cause international socialization. According to the analysis proposed international socialization has produced three main effects on Hezbollah that are: increased accountability; a shift in its legitimacy paradigm; and a mutation of Hezbollah's relation with the Lebanese state.

UN vote backs talks on nuclear arms ban / Collina, Tom Z   Journal Article
Collina, Tom Z Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2013.
Summary/Abstract In a sign of rising frustration among states without nuclear weapons at the slow pace of disarmament efforts, the UN's disarmament committee in New York passed a resolution in November with the support of 129 states calling for the "urgent" start of multilateral negotiations to eliminate nuclear weapons and designating Sept. 26 as the international day for their "total elimination." "Our delegations joined the call of the overwhelming majority of states for more urgency, focus, and new momentum for nuclear disarmament," Ireland's representative said after the Nov. 4 vote, also speaking on behalf of Austria, Liechtenstein, Malta, New Zealand, and San Marino.
