| Summary/Abstract |
This paper discusses the foundational history of a major European mercantile house in colonial South East Asia in the context of commercial developments that had both a regional and global reach. In so doing, it seeks to relate a local and historically particular event to a broader world pattern defined by three rapidly evolving commodity chains, based respectively on the production, distribution and consumption of cotton goods, coffee and opium. In this context, the paper argues that the hard-won commercial success of the firm in question resulted from a significant degree of withdrawal from the bilateral ties between colony and metropolis inherent in the cotton and coffee commodity chains. In their place, the firm had recourse to several varieties of the inter-Asian trade, of which the opium commodity chain constituted the key dimension.

| Summary/Abstract |
The historical links with imperial Denmark still have an impact on Iceland's foreign policy and its approach to Europe in particular. This article examines the triangular relationship between Iceland, its former colonizers (Norway and Denmark) and the European Union (EU). Iceland's political identity was carved out in the course of its independence struggle from Denmark (1830-1944), based on a fundamental belief in its formal sovereignty, which still dictates Icelandic foreign relations to a great extent. In order to uphold the standard of being considered a modern Nordic welfare state, however, Iceland has an economic need to participate in the EU's internal market, resulting in the European Economic Area agreement. Iceland's postimperial sovereignty games are mostly played within these boundaries. To understand its position within the European project, this paper analyses how, until the economic 'Crash of 2008', the national identity emerging out of the colonial experience has limited Iceland's relationship with the EU.

Dynamics of Indian Diaspora in East Africa has been continuous point of attraction for researchers, academicians, policy makers and even general audience. Even a cursory glance reveals that dozens of research has been carried out by scholars and numerous literatures are available on the subject. However, there have been significant changes in the focus of the research. In the colonial period, political activism of Indians in East Africa was a major point contention between colonial power and nationalist leaders which is clearly visible in the writings of CF Andrews (Indian question in East Africa, 1921).
