| Summary/Abstract |
The relationship between China and the United States is one between a rising power and an established power. Whether China is a revisionist power or a status quo power depends on how China and the United States get on with one another in the Asia-Pacific region. The US pivot to Asia and China’s rapid rise has created new dynamics for China–US relations in the region. A changing China–US relationship is also reshaping the strategic landscapes in the Asia-Pacific. US policy towards China has oscillated between containment and engagement since the end of the Cold War. In recent years, this policy has increasingly focused on the “engage but hedge” logic. The Obama administration’s pivot to Asia has rebalanced the focus of the “engage but hedge” policy and put more emphasis on political, economic and security competition with China in the Asia-Pacific region. Despite Xi Jinping’s proposal for a “new model of major power relations” between China and the United States, both countries are actually entering into a “new normal” type of power rivalry in the Asia-Pacific region.

| Summary/Abstract |
The mission of the social sciences is to understand and ameliorate society’s greatest challenges. The data held by private companies, collected for different purposes, hold vast potential to further this mission. Yet, because of consumer privacy, trade secrets, proprietary content, and political sensitivities, these datasets are often inaccessible to scholars. We propose a novel organizational model to address these problems. We also report on the first partnership under this model, to study the incendiary issues surrounding the impact of social media on elections and democracy: Facebook provides (privacy-preserving) data access; eight ideologically and substantively diverse charitable foundations provide initial funding; an organization of academics we created, Social Science One, leads the project; and the Institute for Quantitative Social Science at Harvard and the Social Science Research Council provide logistical help.

Sino-US relationship is a relationship between the largest developing country and the largest developed country in the world. It is now upgrading to a relationship between a large country on the rise and a large country to maintain the status quo. Owing to the distinctive character, complexity and importance of both sides, Sino-US relationship is in reality becoming a composite partnership integrating interests, responsibilities, competition and cooperation. It is a relationship marching forward on the basis of a new concept of interests and principles. The essence of Sino-US relationship is to actively foster cooperation, appropriately handle competition, energetically control differences and avoid confrontation and conflicts. To shape a new model of major-country relations is the common desire of China and the U.S. The two sides need to further strengthen pragmatic economic cooperation and push forward effective cooperation on regional hot-spot and global issues.
