| Summary/Abstract |
The two pre-Napoleonic Nordic polities are best understood as empires. Drawing on recent analytical and historical scholarship on empires, I argue that 17th and 18th century Denmark, on which the piece concentrates, was very much akin to the other European empires existing at the time. Read in this light, national identities within the fragments of the empire appear similar. Nationalisms are all shaped directly on the Danish model, having at the same time Denmark as their constitutive cultural other. The introduction notes that, where all European imperial experiences are concerned, overseas territories had the most wounds inflicted upon them. We would not know this if we considered Faroese, Icelandic and Norwegian nationalism in isolation. These polities, Norway in particular, participated in and benefited from the colonial policies of the empire. This notwithstanding, their national identities insist that these nations were on the receiving - as opposed to the imposing - end of imperialism. This is a historically unwarranted and ethically problematic stance requiring further discussion.

| Summary/Abstract |
This article takes stock of the field of memory studies and where it has moved since the Arab uprisings. If the 1990s marked the first interest in memory studies, the 2000s opened the floodgates to a variety of approaches and localities. The aim is not to present a complete catalogue of memory studies in the Middle East, but rather to highlight some of the trends and patterns in the field and its development over time. It does so both by discussing key works and by focusing on an examination of memory studies about contemporary Lebanon. The article argues that memory studies in the 1990s drew on a particular understanding of transition that came to an abrupt end with the Arab Uprisings. 2011 marked a turning point both in the way the uprisings made scholars question the national framework previously privileged, and by stoking an interest in memories and histories of revolts other than those connected to the anti-colonial struggle. The latest wave of memory studies investigates the uses of online archives and the archive as metaphor for how storage functions for human memory, introducing new methodologies and theoretical directions.

| Summary/Abstract |
Although the reputation of poet Mourid Barghouti (b. 1944) in the west rests on two personal memoirs, this article suggests that Barghouti's poetry deserves equal recognition. The long poem in Midnight and Other Poems (2005), the subject of this article, wrestles with the options of the modern exile. Suffused with memory, I argue that Midnight opens a creative window out of multiple historical sites and personal encounters that interrogates the notions of modernity and progress, victory and loss, and nationalism and patriotism. Out of political dilemmas emerge a beauty in words of resistance and defiance, “guns of mutiny” with deep ethical responsibility toward humanity. From within spiritual orphanage and alienation, Barghouti constructs clear, concrete poetry, an aesthetic that articulates the Palestinian memory, crossing borders of history, geography, and literary traditions. Midnight's tender poetic images reposition the Palestinian exile alongside other unique voices worldwide within memory studies.
