Historical synopsis of over-feminized local governance in neoli / Yara?, Sezen   Journal Article
Yara?, Sezen Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2014.
Summary/Abstract In Turkey, important decentralization measures were taken after the 1980s. The new administrative model gave local governments the role of dealing with social exclusion while financing social welfare expenditures through entrepreneurial investment of their non-material resources. This study is an attempt to discuss how such a challenge for local governments has been resolved through the analysis of gendering impacts of three decentralization reform programs.

Monologue to conversation: comparative approaches in Turkish historiography / Zurcher, Erik Jan   Article
Zurcher, Erik Jan Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract Comparative studies developed late in the field of Ottoman and Turkish history and, when they did, that was due primarily to external influences: the impact of world system theory, the flowering of nationalism studies and the growth of empire studies that was triggered by the fall of the Soviet Union. The comparative methodologies employed have become progressively more sophisticated and because historians of the Ottoman Empire and Turkey are now increasingly asking “big” questions, they are able to use their empirical knowledge to contribute to broader debates and influence theoretical development.

Three turning points in the political development of modern Turkey / Zurcher, Erik-Jan   Journal Article
Zurcher, Erik-Jan Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract This essay investigates the choices made by the Turkish political leadership at three crucial moments in the history of Turkey between World War I and the Cold War. It asks the question if viable alternatives to the chosen route were available, and to what extent the choices made reflected international developments of the time. The episodes looked at are the establishment of a nation-state and of a republic (two separate issues) in 1920–23, the turn towards authoritarianism during the World Crisis (1930–32) and the transition to multi-party democracy in 1945–50.
