In Romania, the MoND was allocated RON8.08 billion (U$2.18 billion) or 1.3% of GDP in 2013, a slight increase over the 2012 defence budget that was RON7.34 billion. Still, the current defence budget is lower than the 2% target set by NATO, which Romania joined in 2004. On the other hand, the defence budget has stayed at 0.8% of GDP since the beginning of the financial crisis in 2008.
