Can gas catalyse peace in the eastern Mediterranean? / Gürel, Ayla; Cornu, Laura Le   Journal Article
Gürel, Ayla Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2014.
Summary/Abstract The economic rationale for energy collaboration between Turkey, Cyprus and Israel is compelling. Cyprus and Israel need commercially viable export routes for their gas while Turkey is eager to diversify and increase its gas supplies. Hydrocarbon resources could potentially be a catalyst for both bringing about a Cyprus settlement and a Turkey-Israel rapprochement. A trilateral cooperation scheme involving a Turkey-Israel pipeline and an LNG plant in Cyprus could offer strong commercial incentives to all parties. But it would require bold political vision on the part of the region's leaders, coupled with backing from influential external actors with an interest in reconciliation and stability in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Cyprus 1974: Turkey's military success followed by political stalemate / Bahcheli, Tozun   Journal Article
Bahcheli, Tozun Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2014.
Summary/Abstract Turkey achieved major gains through its military intervention in Cyprus following the Greek junta's coup against Cypriot president Archbishop Makarios in July 1974. Yet Turkey has been repeatedly frustrated by its inability to capitalize on its military accomplishment and to achieve a political settlement that adequately safeguards Turkish and Turkish-Cypriot interests. This essay traces Turkish policy in Cyprus since 1974 and explains how the Turkish government led by the Justice and Development Party revised Ankara's Cyprus policy to advance Turkey's accession to the European Union. The fading prospects of Turkey's EU membership have diminished Ankara's interest in playing an active role in achieving a Cyprus settlement.

Energy: a geopolitical game changer? / Leigh, Michael   Journal Article
Leigh, Michael Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2014.
Summary/Abstract Energy trade cannot overcome longstanding political conflicts. There are no 'peace pipelines' anywhere in the world. Rather peace is a condition for investment in pipelines and other forms of energy infrastructure. Where political breakthroughs have been achieved, however, energy trade can reinforce cooperation between states and contribute to regional stability. These considerations are particularly pertinent to the Cyprus settlement talks and Middle East Peace Process, against the background of energy discoveries in the Eastern Mediterranean.
