Summary/Abstract |
A perusal of India’ s diplomacy reveals the fact that from the mid-1990s, India has slowly shifted away from its rigid opposition to service trade and finally by the mid-2000s adopted an aggressive pro-service liberalization posture and indulged in extensive economic engagements to bolster the image of India as a reliable economic partner. However, there is still room for improvement. A proactive, holistic and integrated approach should replace piecemeal efforts based on adhocism and hasty negotiations to enjoy the perceived benefits. Given the context of enormity of challenges involved, pursuit of matured economic diplomacy is the need of the hour.

Summary/Abstract |
As Gandhi succinctly put it, “it is impossible to think of a single movement in which Lalaji was not linked.” Mr. Oswal Garrison Villard, editor of “Nation” described Lalaji as a wise, brave and sound ambassador, a generous and modest interpreter of great races to American democracy and a profound student of human liberties. Lala Lajpat Rai, Sher-i-Punjab was indeed, a lion both in thoughts and deeds . Contemporary relevance of his thoughts and prescriptions to remove anomalies from Indian society and polity deserve mention.

Summary/Abstract |
Phailin, a tropical cyclone with wind speed of 220 kmph hit Odisha coast on 12 October 20l3,leaving
a trail of destruction. Tropical cyclone is a storm system characterized by a low pressure centre which produces a.strong wind and ?ooding rain. Tropical cyclones are named to provide easy communication between forecasters and the public. Phailin represented the second-stronger tropical cyclone after 1999 Super Cyclone. There is no gainsaying the fact that Odisha with a coastline of 4801-cm is prone to natural disasters like tropical cyclones, storm surge, whirl wind, tsunami and rain-induced ?oods on account of its sub-tropical littoral location. The 480 Km. long coastline of Odisha extends from Balasore in the North to Ganjam Coast in the South. These natural hazards cause immense damage to life and property. According to reports of Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), total number of cyclonic storms and severe cyclonic storms crossing Odisha coast between 1891 to 2000 was 98 while 69, 79 and 62 cyclones struck the coasts of West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu respectively. Super Cyclone of 1999 devastated 14 districts of Odisha with 'catastrophic human consequences.

The mere fact that India has been subject to constant terror attacks amply necessitates effective response and actions. Indo-Pak engagement on terror should constitute one of the significant components of a comprehensive counter-terror policy and strategy for India.

Summary/Abstract |
SAARC is not a forum for clearing Indo-Pak distrust; it stands for far greater regional interests. No country should be allowed to be a spoiler of this serious agenda. Being the two most important members of the regional association, both India and Pakistan shoulder a special responsibility to instil new life and vigour in regional cooperation and go beyond paying lip service to it. Subramanian Swamy, the Chairman of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Strategic Affairs Committee, commented in The Hindu on 25 November 2014, “Since India constitutes 70 per cent or more of SAARC’s area and population, and has political conflicts with all its neighbours, India has to redefine its role, from seeking reciprocity in bilateral relations, to being prepared to go the extra mile in meeting the aspirations of all other SAARC nations.”. The greater regional interests should not be sacrificed at the altar of the intransigent attitudes of some member nations of SAARC.
