| Summary/Abstract |
The aim of this paper is to explore Hindu-Muslim relations through the cinematic register of on-screen inter-faith marriages, and critique the undercurrent of 'Otherness' that undergirds most of these narratives in the post-Hindutva milieu. Since the Hindu female embodies the (Hindu) nation in popular imagination, Muslim males gain access to Hindu females only within narrations of perfidy and 'inappropriate appropriation', signifying their perceived 'Otherness'. The cohabitation of the Muslim female with a Hindu male, on the other hand, is framed within quotidian love narratives and marks her homecoming or gharwaapsi. Even as it offers national integration as its central motif, Jodhaa Akbar (JA) offers a narrative in which Akbar must be sufficiently indigenized and homogenized to merit absorption into the nation. JA both participates in and responds to the construction of this 'Otherness', as I shall demonstrate. While charting a new cartography of cinematic terrain where the faith of a minority group occupies the centre stage, JA nevertheless presents a Hindutva polemic aware of accusations of self-aggrandizement and thus amenable to hegemonic concerns.

| Summary/Abstract |
This essay provides new evidence on local Pakistani politics in the immediate post-independence period. It reveals that far from being a period of national unity and service to the fledgling state, the country was mired in faction-building strategies between political rivals, competing for power and scrambling for resources, with debilitating consequences for democratic consolidation. While the new sources - largely based upon the archival records deposited at the National Documentation Centre, Islamabad - provide material relating primarily to Punjab, this essay demonstrates that the tensions between central government and the provinces can only be comprehended by reference to studies of localities.

| Summary/Abstract |
This paper examines the unintended prospect of international aid-driven maladaptation in Bangladesh. While attempts by aid agencies to channel scarce resources to finance structural adaptation measures are commendable, complementary non-structural measures remain under the radar. Using an exploratory research approach this paper investigates the state of cyclone shelters in two coastal districts: Chittagong and Cox's Bazar. The findings indicate that the lack of adequate shelter capacity, maintenance funding, and community participation has exacerbated the vulnerability of Chittagong's marginalised urban population. The paper contends that international aid can avoid being maladaptive by accentuating community-based governance and facilitating community capacity to fund the maintenance of cyclone shelters in new ways

The multidimensionality of poverty is often neglected at the policy-formulation stage in developing countries. As need priorities of local poor vary across countries and within regions of the same country, an understanding of finely tuned poverty indicators should be the starting point in formulating country-specific poverty-reduction strategies. By reviewing cross-country studies and existing poverty literature, this paper demonstrates the construction of a multidimensional poverty model to better inform poverty listing in the case of Bangladesh.

| Summary/Abstract |
Throughout 2011, events celebrating, debating and criticizing the 50 years of Goa's existence within the Indian Union took place across Goa. These debates oscillated between the poles of perceiving what happened on the 19 December 1961 as either 'liberation' or 'occupation', reflecting the broad spectrum of perspectives at the time. Missing from these discussions were the views of Goans beyond Goa, across the Indian Ocean in East Africa and further afield. Even when divided by the Indian Ocean from life in Goa, they retained an interest in their country of origin. This paper uses archival and oral history sources to contextualize and understand East African Goans' responses, to address this gap in the literature, to problematize some existing accounts of the events and to draw attention to the significance of transimperial connections across the Indian Ocean. I argue that the lack of active involvement in political developments by the majority of Goans - whether they were in Goa or in East Africa - was intimately linked to the anxiety many of them felt about what the creation of nation-states in both the Indian subcontinent and East Africa would mean in practical terms for individuals' lives 'on the ground'
