Eurosatory: from PUMA IFV to G-NIUS UGV / Gangadhran, Surya   Journal Article
Gangadhran, Surya Journal Article

Publication 2014.
Summary/Abstract eurosatory, Europe's premier land and E marine defence show, wound up on a sober note given the general downturn in the world economy and lower defence budgets in America and Europe. Looking only at Europe, defence spending appears largely confined to the UK, France and Germany. There too, the budgets have been squeezed in an effort to get the most bang for the least buck. Some of the new products on show were a helicopter with a 25mm cannon, a shock absorbing helmet, a mini- jammer and a new medium tank concept. The jammer Solo should be of some interest in India, it weighs about five kilos and can be plugged into a vehicle's 12-volt outlet or a battery pack.

And, just a few days later on 28 March 1954, Pandit Iawaharlal Nehru came to Palam and was flown to Tilpat range for the fire power demo of the IAF. So, like in everything connected with air power of the nation, the lAF was a trailblazer in the Rotary Wing field too.

Summary/Abstract The Aviation Corps ( AAC ) is nowhere near the one envisaged in 1963 by the then COAS Gen jN Chaudhry or as has been projected in the army's perspective plans over the years and lacks some vital elements in its inventory, related to firepower, lift and logistics capability. lt is indeed a far cry from the Aviation Corps of the other professional armies in the world like US and UK and our neighbors China and Pakistan, who operate and own all types of helicopters as well certain number of fixed wing aircraft.

Summary/Abstract Vrikrant (version1.0], INS Viraat and now, lNS Vikramaditya. In the last ' three decades, the carrier types have A changed, the fighter types and the fighters have changed but the Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) helicopters and the Search & Rescue (SAR) helicopters have remained the same. The prized aircraft carriers of the lndian Navy Viraat and Vikramaditya, share the meagre ASW helicopter resources represented in the INAS 330 Harpoons, a squadron that has been spiritedly operating the Westland Seaking Mk 42/42A and 42B. This isn't saying much because the 20 Seaking 42B's acquired in the mid-1980's (commencing 1985) now number less than 14 and are operating on will power, 'jugaad' and prayer, much to the dismay of all concerned.

Nuclear power: the only way forward / Maitra, Ramtanu   Journal Article

Summary/Abstract In April, Indian Atomic Energy Commission [AEC] Chairman Dr RK Sinha announced that the design for the thorium-fueled nuclear reactor, known as the Advanced Heavy Water Reactor (AHWR), has been completed. The AHWR will form the third and filial stage in India's three-stage fuel-cycle plan. A 300- MW prototype is scheduled to be built in 2016, and it will start generating electricity by 2023. "To generate a single megawatt of electricity from this world's first thorium-based reactor, it would take at least 7-8 years," said Sinha. Thorium, a fissionable fuel, is the second- most available element on earth and abundant in India's coastal sands. No other country has done as much neutron physics work on thorium as have India's nuclear scientists. The positive results they obtained have motivated India's nuclear engineers to use thorium- based fuels in the more advanced reactors that will soon enter the under-construction stage. But while thorium-fueled indigenous nuclear power plants will pave the way for India to produce the sizeable amounts of power it needs in the short term, the country needs to move forward quickly and decisively to set the stage for ushering in hydrogen-fueled nuclear fusion-based power generation as its bread and butter for the future.
