Afghan refugees: the impact on Pakistan / Borthakur, Anchita   Journal Article
Borthakur, Anchita Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract One of the most important arenas that have been profoundly affected by the security situation in Afghanistan is Pakistan's internal security environment. The instability in Afghanistan has had a negative spill-over effect on Pakistan's domestic security scenario, as the Afghan quagmire poses immense implications on Pakistan's domestic framework. One of the important consequences of the Afghan conflict since the 1970s has been the massive inflow of the Afghan refugee population to the neighbouring Pakistan which in following years has brought about a number of demographic and security challenges to the Pakistani society. Therefore along with a number of factors, at this present juncture, Afghan refugees have also become a principal factor in determining Pakistan's Afghanistan policy.

CIA's covert predator drone war in Pakistan, 2004-2010: the history of an assassination campaign / Williams, Brian Glyn   Journal Article
Williams, Brian Glyn Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2010.
Summary/Abstract This article provides the first overview of the CIA's secret drone campaign against Al Qaeda and the Taliban in Pakistan's tribal areas from its origins in 2001's Operation Enduring Freedom to the end of 2010. In the process it addresses the spatial dimensions of the campaign (where are the strikes being directed and where do the drones fly from), Pakistani reactions to this threat to both their sovereignty and an internal Taliban enemy, technological developments and Taliban and Al Qaeda responses to this unprecedented airborne assassination campaign. While the debate on this issue has often been driven by the extremes which either support the campaign as the most effective tool in killing terrorists or condemn it for driving Pakistanis to new levels of anti-Americanism, this article points out a third path. Namely, that many Pakistani Pashtun tribesmen living in the targeted areas support the strikes against the Taliban who have terrorized them in recent years.

Contemporary geopolitics of FATA: an analysis of the Afghanistan-Pakistan border region / Hilali, A Z   Journal Article
Hilali, A Z Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2013.
Summary/Abstract In the post-9/11 era, the international strategic and political culture changed. The notion of 'global Jihad' became popular. The prevalence terrorist violence legitimized US interventions in Afghanistan. It further expanded to Pakistan's Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) making it the chessboard of great power politics. The United States and NATO have launched military operations against the Taliban and al-Qaeda network. It blamed Pakistan for providing a safe haven to militants in its tribal belt. It is a fact that foreign intervention has become the main catalyst for militancy. The War on Terror is a 'bleeding wound' for Pakistan and people perceive that Islamabad should disassociate from the US-led war because it is against the national interest of the country.

Critical perspective on a recent survey of opinion in Pakistan' / Taj, Farhat   Journal Article
Taj, Farhat Journal Article

Publication 2011.
Summary/Abstract This paper is a critically analysis of a public opinion survey recently conducted by the New America Foundation (NAF) and Terror Free Tomorrow (TFT) in the Federally Administered Tribal Area, FATA, of Pakistan on various issues pertaining to the war on terror. I argue that the survey misinforms about the tribal public opinion. To substantiate the argument I demonstrate that the survey is marred by ethical and methodological shortcomings.
