Are survey experiments externally valid / Barabas, Jason; Jerit, Jennifer   Journal Article
Barabas, Jason Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2010.
Summary/Abstract Researchers use survey experiments to establish causal effects in descriptively representative samples, but concerns remain regarding the strength of the stimuli and the lack of realism in experimental settings. We explore these issues by comparing three national survey experiments on Medicare and immigration with contemporaneous natural experiments on the same topics. The survey experiments reveal that providing information increases political knowledge and alters attitudes. In contrast, two real-world government announcements had no discernable effects, except among people who were exposed to the same facts publicized in the mass media. Even among this exposed subsample, treatment effects were smaller and sometimes pointed in the opposite direction. Methodologically, our results suggest the need for caution when extrapolating from survey experiments. Substantively, we find that many citizens are able to recall factual information appearing in the news but may not adjust their beliefs and opinions in response to this information.

Can democracy counteract Xenophobia?: comparing the Russian and U.S. experience / Pain, Emil; Suslova, Maria   Journal Article
Pain, Emil Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Publication 2012.
Summary/Abstract Russians frequently engage in heated discussions about whether xenophobia is at the root of many large-scale conflicts. Some analysts - whom we shall call sporadic supporters of constructivism - hurl accusations at the mass media: there would be no phobias as a source of conflict if the media refrained from emphasizing the ethnic, racial, or religious identity of the conflicting sides or if they ignored such problems altogether. Supporters, also mostly sporadic, of the neo-institutional theory, which is more in fashion at present, object to such opinions and claim that conflicts arise out of flaws in the institutional system. If Russia were genuinely democratic and ruled by law, the fundamental prerequisites for ethnic and/or religious phobias would disappear.

Can private media contribute to fighting political corruption in sub-Saharan Africa? lessons from Ghana / Asomah, Joseph Yaw   Journal Article
Asomah, Joseph Yaw Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract In sub-Saharan Africa, the private media are often considered corrupt and thus incapable of performing critical watchdog functions. Using the Ghanaian case, the objective of this study is to examine how the private media contribute to exposing political corruption and demanding accountability. Based on the media-as-a-watchdog theory and on primary and secondary data, this article argues that private media outlets make significant contributions to the fight against political corruption. In-depth, semi-structured interviews were used to collect primary data in Ghana. Relevant secondary data from media reports and scholarly work supplement the primary data. The research findings show that Ghanaian private media address political corruption through investigative reporting, agenda-setting, providing a forum for anti-corruption discussions, and acting as a pressure group for institutional and legal reforms as well as political accountability. This article thus questions the popular claim that in sub-Saharan Africa, the private media cannot contribute meaningfully to combatting corruption involving influential political actors. Policy and future research implications are presented in the conclusions.

Competing claims: when do Corsican nationalists gain foreign news coverage? / Hoffbauer, Andreas Michael   Journal Article
Hoffbauer, Andreas Michael Journal Article

Publication 2011.
Summary/Abstract Drawing on social movement and media literature, this article examines what factors influence coverage of the Corsican nationalist movement in Western European news coverage. A content analysis of 317 newspaper and magazine articles shows that representations and standing of the movement's claims is contingent on prevailing French politics. Contrary to expectations of the dominant literature, violence does not increase media attention.

Conflict of meanings: the U.S. electoral system in crisis / Karpovich, O ; Tretyakov, N   Journal Article
Karpovich, O Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract THE RESULTS of the 2020 U.S. presidential elections represent the exact opposite of the outcome hoped for both in the United States and beyond. Rather than shed light on the future of America, its people and its policies, the elections of November 3 effectively plunged the "land of the free" into a chaos of existential uncertainty, deprived Americans of confidence in the future and inflamed the hostility of opposing political forces to the limit.

Critical role of mass media in international norm diffusion: the case of UNDP Human Development Reports / Joshi, Devin ; O'Dell, Roni Kay   Journal Article
Joshi, Devin Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract What role does mass media play in the promotion of global norms? We address this question through an analysis of Human Development Reports (HDRs) produced by the United Nations Development Programme. Although HDRs have promoted human development ideology over the past twenty-five years, little is known about how and to what extent their messages have been disseminated to the public. Addressing this gap in the literature, we examine a critical intervening factor in the process of international norm diffusion: political communication via the mass media. Highlighting the importance of framing and agenda setting, we identify four communicative mechanisms that can facilitate norm diffusion: credibility, persistence, resonance, and decentralization. Through qualitative and quantitative content analysis, we assess how these mechanisms have enabled HDRs to attract favorable global media attention such that they are now cited much more frequently than their rival, the World Bank's World Development Reports.
