Jiping, Hu Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract With Premier Li Keqiang’s visit to Japan in May 2018, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s visit to China in October 2018, and President Xi Jinping’s attendance at theG20 Osaka Summit in June this year, China-Japan relations have moved out of the bottom and onto the normal track of growth. Before the Chinese Ambassador Cheng Yonghua recently finished his term of office in Japan, he was invited to a luncheon at Prime Minister Abe’s residence on April 16th. On May 7th, Prime Minister and Mrs Abe, former prime ministers Yoshiro Mori and Fukuda Yasuo, Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) Secretary General Toshihiro Nikai, Komeito Party Leader Natsuo Yamaguchi were among the nearly 1,000 Japanese guests from all walks of life at Ambassador Cheng’s farewell reception. On May 9th, Ambassador Cheng was the first foreign guest received by the new emperor of Japan. Through such unusual moves, the Japanese government sent a clear signal of its willingness to improve relations with China. The foreign ministries of the two countries are reportedly consulting on Prime Minister Abe’s another visit to China this year and President Xi Jinping’s upcoming official visit to Japan.

China's friendly offensive toward japan in the 1950s: the theory of wedge strategies and international relations / Yoo, Hyon Joo   Article
Yoo, Hyon Joo Article

Summary/Abstract This article explores why the People's Republic of China employed a surprisingly soft and lenient policy toward Japan in the 1950s despite their historical and political animosities. Relying on a relatively new concept in the study of international relations, I argue that China's conciliatory policy toward Japan represented a wedge strategy that was designed to detach Japan from the United States and weaken the US-Japan alliance. The logic of the theory also reveals that China's policy was in line with its “united front” against the United States during the Cold War.

Prospects of China-Japan Relations in the Context of China-US Competition / Xiaolei, Zhang   Journal Article
Xiaolei, Zhang Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract The American factor has become the biggest external variable in the growth of China-Japanrelations. The COVID-19 pandemic is still raging across the globe, accelerating the changes that are unseen in a century. A salient feature of the global landscape is the intensifying competition between China and the US, which is shaping in a profound way the prospects ofChina-Japanrelations.The changes of administration in Japan and the US in 2020 add to the uncertainties in China-Japan relations. In the face ofcrises and opportunities in the fluid global dynamics, China and Japan should act proactively and meet each other halfway to create conditions for cooperation, expand common interests, and enlargethe space for cooperation so as to develop their relations in line with the requirements of the new era.
