Bibi Sitter and the Hipster: the new comical political discourse / Mann, Rafi   Journal Article
Mann, Rafi Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract The article focuses on the emergence of a new comical political discourse in the 2015 Knesset elections, in which humour was adopted as a major campaign strategy and senior Israeli politicians took upon themselves the role of comedians in ad clips. The development of such discourse is presented as the culmination of an ongoing process of transformation of the political discourse in Israel since 1977. The process was inspired by the American political and media scenes, as well as by changes in Israel’s media map. Social media played a central role in the new comical discourse, as it was heavily used both for the viral dissemination of the clips and for creating engagement. But even as the affectivity of the videos was apparent in terms of the creation on ‘media buzz’, exposure and web engagement, there is still no proof to its influence on the elections outcome. Furthermore, it raises questions about the ability of the Israeli citizenry to rationally discus crucial issues and to form opinion on them.

Summary/Abstract The crossover of journalists to politics is not a novel phenomenon, but in Israel it has intensified in recent years with the increase in the number and the name recognition of the journalists who make the transition. Why do journalists make the transition to politics? Do they make an effective use of their media skills, and how do they perform as parliamentarians? To address these questions, semi-structured interviews were conducted with parliamentary reporters ‒ the main link between parliamentary affairs and the media.

Mann, Rafi Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract Is there a place for military heroes in a post-heroic era and during post-heroic warfare? This article, focusing on the role of the media, especially popular media, in the construction of military heroes and heroism in twenty-first century Israeli society, suggests that, at least within the media, such heroes still play an important role. Based on test cases, among them the 2010 Mavi Marmara affair, the article presents and analyses journalistic professional considerations and practices involving stories about military heroes and explains how items about heroes and heroines correspond with the various requirements of the media. The article also analyses the use of social media in the construction of a new type of ‘folk hero’, who is often a controversial and disputed kind of hero, such as in the case of the soldier who shot and killed a wounded Palestinian terrorist in Hebron.

Mann, Rafi Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract The electoral success of Yair Lapid's Yesh Atid party in the 2013 Knesset elections is discussed in this article as a test case of a worldwide phenomenon of celebrities, among them media personalities, who enter the political field. Bourdieu's interpretive research framework regarding symbolic and social capitals, as well as media capital, is used here to analyse Lapid's versatile career and celebrity status as the background to his performance during the campaign and his ability to win 19 seats in the Knesset. The article also places Lapid's case in the context of political and social developments in Israel in the last decades.
