Army aviation corps: on the wings of transformation / Bansal, Shantanu K   Article
Bansal, Shantanu K Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract Established in 1986, the Army Aviation Corps (AAC) is one of the youngest Corps in the Indian Army. It has operated over all types of terrain from deserts plains, forests and high mountains to perpetually frozen battlefields. Army aviators fly several missions every day to support forces deployed in high altitude areas. Some of the missions are dedicated to casualty evacuation and routine operations for the AAC. Day in and day out, the AAC also perform a wide range of tasks such as ferrying soldiers to and from the battlefield. Army aviators thus work as a force multiplier by providing rapid movement of men and material at short notice. The AAC has taken part in a number of UN missions and several disaster relief operations in India.

Summary/Abstract Offering the new light helicopter to India, Russia intends to share new technologies with the Indian aerospace industry. These technologies can set an industrial base for high-technological production development. The implementation of offers included in Ka-226T offset programme may take the collaboration between Russia and India in the aviation industry to a new level. What is the essence of the Russian offer to India? First of all, it includes the establishment of Ka-226T production in India that can be performed by joint facility of “Russian Helicopters” and Indian SUN Group. It is planned to organise the manufacturing of main Ka-226T parts including fuselage, column and main rotor to perform final assembling, to conduct ground/flight factory and acceptance tests. The helicopters produced by the joint facility can be sold not only to the Indian Ministry of Defence, but also to foreign customers. So, India may obtain a required export product, a unique experience of high-technologic ..

Combat fleet of the IAF: present and future / Kukreja , Dhiraj   Article
Kukreja , Dhiraj Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract Combat aircraft constitute the cutting edge of any air force and so it is with the IAF as well. Modernisation and upgradation of combat platforms are ongoing processes that will help the IAF maintain the operational edge at all times. By the end of the 15th Five Year Plan, it is expected that the IAF inventory would consist largely of fourth and fifth generation platforms. Notwithstanding the depleting numbers that are being witnessed today, the continuing induction of new combat platforms such as the SU 30 MKI as well as the plans of acquiring the Rafale and the Tejas, the IAF would have the capability of long-range precision attack and of delivering conventional and nuclear weapons. This would give the IAF not just the necessary deterrence capability, but also a reliable second-strike capability.

Drones: the game changers in future wars / Gopal, S   Article
Gopal, S Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract High operational reliability is an essential prerequisite for UAVs. A good engine is the most difficult aspect in the designing of a UAV. Designers have to make sure that the engine can support the airframe and the UAV has a low signature through low vibration. It should be able to support long-endurance missions over the target. Another area of operational reliability for a UAV comes from its airframe, which should be able to support the mission in all types of conditions, especially rough weather. There is a flipside to the development of the drones globally. A recent report by the Rand Corporation warned that, in the future, terrorist groups might be able to buy small, armed drones, “Smaller systems could become the next IEDs – low-cost, low-tech weapons that are only of limited lethality individually but can cause considerable attrition when used in large numbers over time.”

India’s geopolitical pirouette / Bajwa, J S   Article
Bajwa, J S Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract There is no doubt that India will have to change; literally pull itself up by its boot laces. A changed India would imply transformation in the way things function in this country. It will imply accountability of those in authority; transparency in all functions of the government; on time delivery; a great measure of responsibility by those in authority and answerability for failure in providing service. Finally, it will imply the demolition of the VIP culture and the ushering in of a consultative format by the people’s representatives for inclusion of the voters in the national decision making process.

Internal security scenario of North East India / Borthakur, R   Article
Borthakur, R Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract The main problem in the North East remains. In spite of the Central Government’s efforts, alienation of the people and perceived grievances still continue. These get multiplied many times as and when reports of molestation and rape of girls from the region and humiliation to North East youth in other parts of the country are reported. These incidents get more than due publicity in electronic and print media of the North East. Such incidents make the North Easterners feel that they are still discriminated against – economically, politically and socially. But all the allegations are not true. The Central Government has provided crores of rupees to all the North East states for development projects. Some of these states survive only on Central Government largesse. The slow implementation of projects cannot be blamed on the Centre alone. Problems such as corruption, bureaucratic delays, power shortages and poor work culture delay completion of projects. Besides, the activities of militants, extremists and Anti-National Elements (ANE) further complicate the situation.

Iron dome: the game-changer / Chopra, Anil   Article
Chopra, Anil Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract The name ‘Iron Dome’ evokes an image of a protective bubble. The Iron Dome is an Israeli ground based, truck towable, short-range, ground-to-air air defence system in operation since 2011. Currently operated only by Israel and Singapore, it has been operationally tested in Operation Pillar of Strength in November 2012 and Operation Protective Edge, the two conflicts against Hamas in Gaza. It is designed and manufactured jointly by Rafael Advanced Defense Systems (Rafael) and Israel Aerospace Industries Ltd (IAI), in close coordination with Israeli Defence Forces (IDF). At a unit cost of $50 million per battery, every missile launch costs approximately $50,000. With a weight of 90 kg, the missile is three metres long and is carried in groups of 20 in each launcher. The warhead is believed to carry 11 kilograms or 24 pounds of high explosives. It is designed to destroy short range rockets and up to 155 mm artillery shells during day or night, at distances between four to 70 km. It can be operated in all weather conditions including in fog, dust storm, low clouds and rain. The lethal range may one day be increased to 250 km.

Need for structural changes in India’s higher defence management / Oberoi, Vijay   Article
Oberoi, Vijay Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract The reality today is that India is facing the strategic environment of the 21st century with its higher defence structures largely as they were in the 1940s. This is a recipe for disaster. A continuation of such outdated structures are already affecting the culture of discipline and sacrifice so assiduously built up over decades, as the armed forces see themselves being downgraded and losing respect. Ossified structures tend to curb initiative, risk taking and integrity which have traditionally been the hallmark of the Indian Military. It is high time that the decades-old selfless and loyal service by the Indian military is given due recognition.

When China rules the world / Chopra, P C   Article
Chopra, P C Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract India’s strategic partnership with middle powers like Japan, Australia, Indonesia and Vietnam will get greater domestic acceptance than an Asian strategy that relies solely on US commitment to maintain balance of power in the region. This will also counter China’s claims that regional security cooperation is merely a part of US and Indian efforts to contain China. Building multiple power coalitions as a complement to engaging China and deepening the strategic partnership with the US will strengthen India’s independent role in the security of Asia.
