Bartal, Shaul Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract Sheikh Yusuf Qaradawi, widely considered the most influential Islamic scholar alive today, is the author of over 120 books and a spiritual leader of the Muslim Brotherhood. He is a member of many international Muslim organizations and the sharia advisor for a number of Islamic banks. Qaradawi is considered a part of the political centre (wasatiyya), positioned between those relying on ancient sunna and Qur’an (salafiyya) sources and the more moderate new stream. His sermons are broadcast live on television to millions of Muslims throughout the world. He also appears on a popular weekly television show dealing with current affairs regarding the sharia on the Al Jazeera network. His beliefs about the Palestinian‒Israeli conflict exert great influence over the Muslim public across the globe. This article represents his views and explains why the war against Israel is so important to the Islamic world.

Lone-wolf or terror organization members acting alone: new look at the last Israeli–Palestine incidents / Bartal, Shaul   Journal Article
Bartal, Shaul Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract The ‘sacrificial attacks’ in Jerusalem and throughout all of Israel, from July 2014 until August 2015, were the promo of the full-scale knife-attack that started from October 2015 until now. The uniqueness of this wave of terror is its length – over a year – and its use of the old-new ‘white weapons’ which, since October 2015, has included women and children. This research answers how and why these lone-wolf attacks started. The ‘lone-wolf’ attacks, as nicknamed in the Israeli and worldwide press, are, in reality, a continuation of the organized terror activities of the Palestinian liberation organizations especially the Islamic Jihad and Hamas. This is not a popular intifada drawing the masses, nor an armed intifada, but a wave of terror that includes a large number of initiated attacks by known anti-Israel Palestinians connected to terrorist organizations by their past activities or through relatives (prisoners or martyrs) or inspired by the Internet sites and social media. The Palestinian liberation organizations are all protecting al-Aqsa and supporting, without any restrictions, a continuation of the attacks against Israeli targets in Jerusalem and competing with each other.

Palestinian Islamic Jihad: Between Nationalism and Religion / Bartal, Shaul   Journal Article
Bartal, Shaul Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract This research explores the development of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) over the last decade as a proxy organization of the Iranian regime, or as a group that finds its way between Palestinian nationalism and support for the religious Islamic revolution of Iran. Most studies of Islamic organizations in Palestine focus on Hamas, the “Big Brother” of the PIJ. Hamas, which grew out of the Muslim Brotherhood in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, began violent operations in 1987 during the First Intifada partially due to its competition with the PIJ. Although the role of the PIJ in Palestinian society has grown in its influence, disappointingly there are very few research studies that analyze this organization. Moreover, most of these works focus on the period before the al-Aqṣā Intifada and especially examine suicide operations and the group’s motives. The main questions to be answered by this study are: What is the nature of the PIJ? Is it a religious movement with religious aims or Palestinian national one? This article analyzes these questions through an examination of the PIJ’s activity vis-à-vis the Islamic Republic of Iran. This study’s central argument is that the PIJ is a Palestinian religious national organization that sees Iran as a partner.

Peel Commission Report of 1937 and the Origins of the Partition Concept / Bartal, Shaul   Journal Article
Bartal, Shaul Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract In July 1937, the members of the Royal Commission, under the leadership of William Robert Wellesley Peel, First Earl Peel, presented a detailed, revolutionary, 400-page report regarding the British Mandate in Palestine. (Lord Peel passed away two months later.) On the basis of the findings in the Report, the British Royal Commission made a number of recommendations, all of which were accepted by Parliament. Among them was that Palestine should be the “the Jewish National Home” and that a Jewish State should be established on part of the Mandate area which would become “as Jewish as England is English.” The area, known as Palestine (in Hebrew, Eretz Yisrael, the Land of Israel), contained important archeological sites excavated by American and European scholars.2 The establishment of a Jewish state would be part of the general transformation of the area.

Bartal, Shaul Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract Sheikh Dr Yusuf al-Qaradawi is one of the most influential Muslim thinkers in the world. Western observers consider him a moderate, a bridge between Muslim conservatives and Islamic activists. This article, through direct translation of Sheikh al-Qaradawi's verbal and written expressions, shows the view of him as a moderate to be wishful thinking when it deals with the Palestinian problem. This article deals with issues preventing reconciliation between Fatah and Hamas and the influence of the Qaradawi era over the struggle between the organizations.
