Summary/Abstract This essay offers an overview of the Chinese posture and debate toward the West Asia and North Africa (WANA) region. The author presents China’s outlook toward the region as a laboratory for an innovative course in Beijing’s future foreign policy. The analysis is divided into three parts: a critical introduction that assesses the role of WANA within the spectrum of Chinese hierarchical vision of the international system, a detailed assessment of the factors that are transforming WANA into one of the most crucial sectors of Beijing’s foreign policy, and a detailed overview of the internal debate on China’s evolving role in the region.

Summary/Abstract A spotlight has been placed on the conduct of intelligence activities pertaining to the revelations of controversial intelligence affairs (i.e., dubious methods of interrogation, such as those used at the Guantánamo Bay detention facility; the comprehensive intelligence gathering conducted by NSA, and more). As a result, the number of scholars and intelligence practitioners concerned with intelligence ethics and with the moral justifiability of the activities conducted by intelligence services has increased.1 While the issue of intelligence ethics is now present in various scholarly debates, especially in the domain of Intelligence Studies, very little attention is being drawn to developing core understanding of the concept. Also, intelligence ethics is neither homogeneous nor yet embedded as a solid research field.

Summary/Abstract The aim of this article is to critically consider the effectiveness of the “Financial War on Terrorism” on the funding streams of the Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (ISIL). The article begins by identifying that the origins of the “Financial War on Terrorism” can be found in the international efforts to tackle money laundering. It then moves on to consider if the “Financial War on Terrorism” is able to tackle the funding streams of ISIL. The article concludes that the “Financial War on Terrorism” is no longer fit for the purpose to tackle the funding streams of ISIL.
