Global politics of climate change: challenge for political science / Keohane, Robert O   Article
Keohane, Robert O Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract I am honored to have been chosen as the James Madison Lecturer for 2014. In considering my topic I quickly decided on the global politics of climate change because it is becoming increasingly clear that climate change is one of the major political and institutional, as well as ecological, challenges of our time. When—not if—the ice sheets covering Greenland and Antarctica melt significantly and the warming oceans expand, sea levels will rise. Climate warming probably will also cause stronger storms and other forms of extreme weather; agricultural production will suff er, especially at extreme levels of climate change. Such sea level rise could lead to the inundation of areas in which more than a billion people live, mostly in Asia. The implications of climate change are not simply minor adjustments in life-style, increased seasonal discomfort, and shifts of fl ora and fauna toward the poles, but major disruptions in human life as well as in natural ecology.

Learning through research : using data to train undergraduates in qualitative methods / Elman, Colin; Kapiszewski, Diana ; Kirilova, Dessislava   Article

Summary/Abstract We agree with Druckman’s (2015) view that a liberal arts education should equip students with “the tools needed to address and resolve problems in a variety of domains” (Druckman 2015 ). We are also sympathetic to his related observation that for “social scientists, this means educating students so that they know how to apply the basic scientifi c method of asking questions, generating theories and hypotheses, collecting data, and analyzing results” (ibid.)

Living accountability: hot rhetoric, cool theory, and uneven practice / Romzek, Barbara S   Article
Romzek, Barbara S Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract In my experience, the topics people study tend to be those that touch some deep personal value of the individual. That is true for me regarding accountability. And the dynamics of accountability—the topic to which I have devoted much of my attention over the years—encompass both theoretical richness and practical challenges. I love talking about accountability and responsiveness because these are the values in which I believe. Why? Because accountability is based on fairness, integrity, doing what is right, and regard for others. Because it is fundamental to how people and organizations operate.

Politics and policy of ebola / Gronke, Paul   Article
Gronke, Paul Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract It was a dark and stormy night in mid October in Boone, North Carolina. I was late for a gumbo dinner that my co-editor was hosting at his house in honor of a visit to the area by Barbara Walthall, the managing editor for PS. Wind gusts exceeding 50 mph were forecast, and rain was coming down in sheets. I wasn’t quite sure the mountainside wouldn’t wash down on me before I got to Phillip’s house. “Too bad for Barbara,” I thought, “she missed the fall colors by just one day.”

Research and undergraduate teaching: a false divide? / Druckman, James N   Article
Druckman, James N Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract The American Political Science Association (APSA) connects scholars from varying fi elds, perspectives, backgrounds, and educational institutions. A microcosm of this diversity can be found on the APSA Council of which I currently have the privilege of being a member. At a recent council meeting, discussion turned to APSA’s Teaching and Learning Conference. The conference serves as a venue in which many political scientists defi ne their professional communities, yet, it regularly operates at a financial loss for APSA.
