There has been a clear paradigm shift in Indo-Bangladesh relations over the past few years, as now exemplified and concretised by the agreements signed during Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Dhaka in June 2015. As Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said some time ago, it is the season of friendship in Indo-Bangladesh relations. It remains now to build further on the foundation that has been laid.

Indo-Bangladesh relations have been full of paradoxes like any other neighbour. On the one hand it reflects both maturity and political will; whereas on the other it has also seen bitterness with certain elements inside Bangladesh. There is hardly any doubt that both the neighbours have come closer in the recent past. Bangladesh under Hasina has emerged as friendliest of the neighbours and has addressed genuinely the security concerns of India.

While on the one hand, cooperation in crucial sectors like energy and connectivity is receiving the much-needed momentum, water-sharing of the Teesta River continues to exist as a contentious issue, posing socio-economic and geo-political challenges between the two neighbours.

| Summary/Abstract |
Bangladesh and India are enjoying increasingly close relations in the latter’s northeastern region. This represents a transformation in the two countries’ past relationship, which was characterised by suspicion, distrust and insecurity. This recent change, which began with the arrival of Bangladesh’s current regime in 2009, has resulted in a sense of cooperation, mutual interest and connectivity. This article aims to explain this transformation. The first part of this article presents the traditional sources of insecurity between Bangladesh and India, which resulted in confrontational relations between the two neighbours. The second part then highlights how a convergence of security, economic and energy cooperation has transformed Bangladesh’s relations with India, especially, in its northeastern region.
