Summary/Abstract |
The Russian military units assembled for the punitive expedition against Poland in 1831 included also the Finnish Sharp-Shooter Battalion of the Imperial Guard. The Finnish Guard experienced its hardest battles in the rearguard action against general Skrzynecki's Polish forces in Mazovia in May 1831. Aside the primary records of the Battalion, testimonies of these encounters were also given in the memoirs of Polish officers. The battles in Mazovia were the first time in history when Finnish soldiers had fought and died in service of the Russian Empire, and thus played a part securing the Imperial favor for the Finnish autonomy

Summary/Abstract |
Under what conditions do battlefield coalitions fight as greater or less than the sum of their parts? Introducing the Belligerents in Battle dataset, which contains information on actors fighting in 492 battles during interstate wars waged between 1900 and 2003, we present, for the first time, a portrait of the universe of battlefield coalitions. Battlefield coalitions win more often and suffer fewer casualties than belligerents fighting alone. Battlefield coalitions including forces fielded by the United States, states with pre-existing treaty agreements, and democracies are particularly powerful. By contrast, battlefield coalitions that include non-state actors lose the majority of their fights.

Summary/Abstract |
Using a sample of battlefield data from twentieth-century wars, the author of this article tests a number of previously untested hypotheses linking battle events and the decision to end violent conflict. The author explores how factors like the distribution of power, battlefield casualties, and information that flows from the battlefield influence war termination. The analysis speaks to the validity of competing rational choice theories of war termination.

Summary/Abstract |
Military forces train in constructive, virtual and live simulation. If they expect to be ready at a moment's notice, they need to train contin-ually. The complex skills required of military staffs at battalion level and above require constant prac-tice and require that warfighters and battle staffs "train as they fight" in high-fidelity, realistic and challenging exercises.
