Information Warfare as the Hobbesian Concept of Modern Times — The Principles, Techniques, and Tools of Russian Information Oper / Mölder, Holger   Journal Article
Mölder, Holger Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract Vladimir Putin’s regime in Russia has re-established borderlines between the East and the West and sees the world in terms of conflict with the West. Political and military tools used by Russia in this confrontation may vary. Since 2013, Russia has started to develop a non-linear approach to military strategy, in which the difference between ‘wartime’ and ‘peacetime’ disappears and permanent warfare may become the normal form of relationship between states as described for society by the English philosopher Thomas Hobbes in his works of the 17th century. Information warfare forms an influential part of this non-linear strategy. The Russian information warfare machine is quite flexible and easily adaptable to new situations. The conflict in the Ukraine has become a proving ground, where the techniques and tools of information warfare have been actively tested.

Sergei Loznitsa, ethereal documentarian: untangling the Russia-Ukraine war in the Kiev Trial, Donbass, and Maidan / Berman, Bianca   Journal Article
Berman, Bianca Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract On 24 February 2022, Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in a major escalation of a war that had been persisting since 2014. This article explores three of Sergei Loznitsa’s films set in Ukraine and examines the way in which their shared observational style informs the Russia-Ukraine war and may influence viewers’ perceptions of the complexities of the conflict. A close analysis reveals that the observational mode used in Maidan (2014), Donbass (2018), and The Kiev Trial (2022) has two primary effects. First, in Donbass and The Kiev Trial, the unfiltered style serves as a contrast to the often farcical and ‘staged’ content, thereby exposing the lies underpinning Soviet presence in Ukraine and the current Russian invasion. Second, in addition to exposing Russian misinformation, Loznitsa’s observational style in Maidan and Donbass facilitates identification with the Ukrainian people by visually and auditorily immersing the viewer in the world on the screen. The article concludes with a discussion of the significance of Loznitsa’s work in shaping the public’s perception of – and continued commitment to – the war in Ukraine.

Tragedy of Ukraine / Petro, Nicolai N   Journal Article
Petro, Nicolai N Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract As the war in Ukraine enters its fifth year, it remains mired in debt, corruption, and strife. The country seems to be caught up, again, in a vicious cycle that has been repeating itself for decades, if not centuries. Classical Greek tragedy gives us a deeper look at the reasons behind Ukraine’s persistent failure to achieve social stability, and to suggest remedies. The tragic cycle can be broken through a compromise in which individual, social and divine aspirations for jus-tice are reconciled. As long as Ukrainian leaders seek to achieve justice without compromise, the nation’s self-destructive cycle is likely to persist.

World Order Z: the Irreversibility of Change and Prospects for Survival / Yefremenko, Dmitry V   Journal Article
Yefremenko, Dmitry V Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract The article discusses the causes and likely global consequences of the military standoff between Russia and Ukraine, which constitutes the most acute phase of the geopolitical confrontation between Russia and the West. The Russian leadership’s decision to launch a special military operation in Ukraine is analyzed using the conception of ontological security. The economic and financial consequences of this conflict may lead to a breakdown of the current model of globalization and facilitate a transition to a model of double global circulation between major centers of political and economic influence.
