Cronulla riots: muslims’ place in the white imaginary spatiality / Kabir, Nahid Afrose   Article
Kabir, Nahid Afrose Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract On 11 December 2005 at Sydney’s Cronulla Beach about 5000 Australians, mostly young men from Sutherland Shire, wrapped themselves in Australian flags and asserted that Cronulla Beach belonged to them through abusive language against Lebanese Australians. Subsequently, on 12 December 2005 a group of Australians of Lebanese heritage launched an attack in reprisal. The former group exhibited their “Australianness” through an urban model based on exclusion, implying they were the West so, of course, they were better than the rest. The latter fought back, exhibiting that they also represented the West. They demonstrated their territorial rights as they asserted that the beach also belonged to them. The rather aggressive posturing of both parties raises the question of whether Muslim Australians have a place in the white imaginary spatiality.

Making place: muslims in the neighbourhood / Jamil, Uzma   Article
Jamil, Uzma Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract Regent Park was built with great optimism in the 1950s as a public housing neighbourhood in Toronto. Over the years, however, it has come to be seen as a failure of this ideal and stigmatized as a poor, crime-ridden, violent neighbourhood with large numbers of visible minorities and immigrants. Recent urban revitalization efforts have aimed to transform the physical space as well as to re-brand the neighbourhood in more positive ways as part of a diverse, multicultural city. This paper critically considers the construction of meaning of Regent Park as a place, between the external representations of the city’s urban developers and the internal, “lived experiences” of its Muslim residents. It analyses the construction of meaning of Regent Park as a Muslim place within the representation of Toronto as a Canadian, multicultural city.

Patronage and territoriality: islamizing space in the Western city / Nasser, Noha   Article
Nasser, Noha Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract Today’s cosmopolitan Western City contains large numbers of sub-cultures within its neighbourhoods, streets and buildings that are re-configuring the norms of citizenship and place. This paper examines the role of citizenship as a sense of cultural identity, territorial belonging and place attachment in the building of three mosques in Adelaide across a 100-year time span. Starting with the colonial period and the building of the first mosque in Australia up until the post-colonial period of large-scale Muslim immigration to Australia, the paper demonstrates the forms of social organization and patronage that were created as a strategy for collective action to make the building of these mosques possible. Set against the marginal political position of Muslims in Australia throughout this period, this paper shows the creativity of social and resource mobilization to stake a claim for the ownership of land in the Western City and to define a Muslim ethnic boundary.
