Summary/Abstract The global geopolitical landscape of the 21st century is being re-shaped by a rising and increasingly aggressive China, a US-China relationship with a Jekyll-Hyde complexion of economic interdependence and political power-play, a US-Russia freeze of Cold War proportions and (flowing from these trends) an ever-closer Russia-China embrace. India has to factor the implications of these developments in its approach to its external relationships.

0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract In international diplomacy, friendships between nations have been christened in many forms. The relationship between the UK and the US is called a ‘Special Relationship’ while that between China and Pakistan as one ‘higher than the mountains and deeper than the oceans.’ The Indo-Russian friendship goes much beyond such labels and stands out as an enduring partnership. Nowhere is this more visible than in the defence sector where Russia, erstwhile USSR, is the largest supplier of arms to India.

Pursued under the rubric of India-Russia Inter Governmental Commission on Military Technical Cooperation valid till 2020, it has transformed from buyer-seller relationship to partnership where both sides seek joint research, development and production. BRAHMOS cruise missile is an excellent example of this partnership with the fifth generation aircraft on the anvil. Since 70 per cent of the Indian military hardware is of Russian origin, this partnership has a bright future.
