Summary/Abstract |
China's rapid development and urbanization over the past 30 years have caused large numbers of rural residents to migrate to urban areas in search of work. This has created a generation of children who remain behind in rural areas when their parents migrate for work. Previous research has found mixed impacts of parental migration on the educational achievement of left-behind children (LBC), perhaps because of methodological deficiencies and lack of recognition of the heterogeneity of this population of children. Our study attempts to examine the impact of six types of parental migration on the academic achievement of a rural junior high school sample. Our study uses a panel of 7148 junior high school students to implement a difference-in-difference analysis and finds that parental migration has a negative and significant impact on the academic achievement of junior high school students. Our study suggests that the Chinese Government should implement measures to dismantle barriers to the human capital accumulation of LBC to ensure sustainable economic growth and human capital development in China.

Summary/Abstract |
This paper seeks to understand the learning outcomes that prevail across key subpopulations in China today. Data from a nationally representative survey show that rural youth are two years behind urban children in math and Chinese. Non-Han minorities, children in poorer counties, and children with less-educated parents are the most vulnerable.

Summary/Abstract |
Spatial planning is considered as an important governance instrument to cope with uncoordinated regional problems. This article explores the underlying rationale and mechanisms of spatial planning in provincial China through a case study of the Jiangsu region along the Yangtze River (JSYR) plan. It reveals that the practice of the JSYR plan reflected the changing strategic expression of the provincial government on regional development and was shaped by the contests between provincial and municipal governments. The planning policies and provincial economic and political mobilizations formed as a spatial policy framework that promoted plan implementation at the municipal level. The plan achieved development goals of overall economic growth and infrastructural construction, but it was ineffective regarding development control and regional coordination. The case study also sheds light on the dynamic relationship between provincial and municipal governments, and the structural problems of spatial governance under economic decentralization and political centralization in China.

Summary/Abstract |
In recent years, new energy vehicles (NEVs), which are considered to be one of the most important ways of solving global warming and energy crisis, have seen rapid development. Owing to the far-reaching policy implemented by Chinese government, the sales volume (SV) of NEVs has seen an exponential growth, and China has become the world's largest consumer of NEVs. The objective of this study was to determine the focus of Chinese consumers with regard to NEVs and to understand how their interests influence the SV. We used data mining combined with deep-learning technologies to investigate a large number of purchase reasons and found that the primary motivating factors were the vehicle, demographic characteristics, and national policy. Additionally, to determine how these factors affect the market, we used correlation analysis to examine the relationship between the SV and the factors. The results indicated that national policies, infrastructure, demographic factors, and safety awareness are closely related to the SV. The findings of this study suggest valuable strategies for government departments, allowing them to publish relevant policies, and manufacturers, allowing them to target specific consumer groups. This approach addresses the environmental concerns by promoting the utilization of NEVs rather than traditional fuel vehicles.
