Summary/Abstract |
From the dawn of history Asia had dominated the world trade and the global space due to its rich heritage, mature civilizations and its socio-cultural values. However, internal fissures and struggles, lack of strategic vision and a certain level of complacency led to the stagnation of innovation. They were thus left behind in the revolutions in economic and military affairs leading to their colonisation, economic depredation and penury. However, post-independence the robust economic rise of Asian economies since the late 1970s – the opening up of China, under Deng Xiaoping, to US to garner economic support in the late 1970s, the Japanese economic juggernaut, the rise of the Asian Tigers and the opening up of India’s economy in the 1980s and 90s led to the concept of ‘The Asian Century’ in the 21st Century. the gradual shift in the maritime trade centre of gravity to the Indo-Pacific Region symbolises this view despite scepticism in the West.

Summary/Abstract |
Preferential trade agreements pose a big challenge for the multilateral trading system. Throughout the first decade of the twenty-first century, their number has grown significantly. However, these agreements have a range of disadvantages compared with the multilateral regime, for example, in trade facilitation and in dispute settlement. Whereas it will be difficult to stop the further spreading of this wave of preferential agreements, attempts can be made to reduce the negative effects of trade agreements that do, by definition, discriminate against other countries. In this article, a range of potential remedies are discussed, from a moratorium to the better enforcement of World Trade Organization rules on preferential agreements as well as improved monitoring.

Summary/Abstract |
This article presents a brief characterization of Latin America and the Caribbean's foreign trade, as well as its trade integration efforts. The first section examines the region's recent trade performance in terms of share in world trade, trade openness, main partners, most dynamic sectors, and export concentration. Particular emphasis is placed on the dynamics of the region's foreign trade in the past decade, including the growing importance of trade with China and its implications. The second section focuses on the recent evolution of intra-regional trade and of regional economic integration initiatives. The third section deals with trade negotiations with extra-regional partners. The fourth and final section outlines some policy challenges the region faces to increase the contribution of trade to its development prospects.

Summary/Abstract |
In 2016 Alibaba founder Jack Ma founded eWTP as both a commercial and a digital world trade lobbying platform. COVID-19 provided an important window for eWTP to demonstrate the power of its commercial digital commerce network for both commerce and aid purposes. Relief items, sold and donated, were rapidly distributed from China across Asia, Africa, and Europe. This article explains eWTP in principle and in practice. Evident is that eWTP played an important, targeted, and expansive role during the crisis and has demonstrated a capacity to unlock trade for developing countries and small and medium enterprises. It is, however, too early to tell if this will convert to long-run gains for eWTP itself. This owes to the pandemic having served as a bigger springboard for both the commercial and regulatory agenda that eWTP has been a front-runner of. The net long-run impact for eWTP is hence unclear.
