EU Trade Policy: Principles versus Pragmatism. The Cases of Vietnam and Cambodia / Pennisi Di Floristella, Angela   Journal Article
Pennisi Di Floristella, Angela Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract European Union (EU) trade policy has appeared rather contradictory recently towards countries in which there are instances of human rights violations, such as Vietnam and Cambodia. Given that principled pragmatism, set down in the 2016 EU Global Strategy, entails the view that the EU approach must fit the reality of EU interests, it is a useful lens for explaining why the EU treats its trade partners differently. This is important in view of the EU’s evolving foreign and security policy in the Southeast Asian region and its distinctive economic, security and strategic interests in Vietnam and Cambodia.

Summary/Abstract I could limit my comments to Nathalie Tocci’s interview to a single sentence: I subscribe to more or less everything she says. I do want to focus however on what can be read between the lines and render a couple of things more explicit.

Europe as a Normative Power in the Indo-Pacific: the Practice of Principled Pragmatism amidst US-China Competition / Su, Cho-Hsin   Journal Article
SU, CHO-HSIN Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract The Indo-Pacific region and its politics are now in obscurity, and the power dynamics of US-China competition have become well settled within a new concept of geopolitics. As an economic giant and a distinct power in IR, the EU’s position and strategy in the region are garnering attention. This paper starts by discussing the EU’s perceived systemic rivalry with China and its falling out with the United States, its Atlantic ally since the two World Wars. It then introduces the concept of Europe as a normative power in order to better understand the EU’s policies. It points out how “Normative Power Europe” (NPE) has adapted to its surroundings by introducing the concept of principled pragmatism concept in 2016. The paper then lays out the EU’s security strategies in Asia and highlights its narrative of strategic autonomy, referred to as the Sinatra doctrine. From there, it employs the notion of NPE and principled pragmatism to delineate the EU’s unique stance in the Indo-Pacific region and how it puts this principled pragmatism into practice. Finally, it analyzes how the EU has strategically applied these concepts to succeed in its own way amidst US-China competition in the Indo-Pacific.

European Union global strategy: good ambitions and harsh realities / Grand, Camille   Journal Article
Grand, Camille Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract Achieving a European Union Global Strategy (EUGS) and having it endorsed by the European Council is in itself a significant success for the High Representative/Vice President (HR/VP) Federica Mogherini. This effort to develop a new strategic document for EU’s external action was long overdue as the 2003 European Security Strategy (ESS) was clearly outdated.

Principled pragmatism: the Eastern committee of German economy and west German–Chinese relations during the early cold war, 1949–1958 / Bernardini, Giovanni   Journal Article
BERNARDINI, GIOVANNI Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract This article focuses on the interplay between the political authorities and economic actors in the Federal Republic of Germany in the process of establishing relations with the People's Republic of China after 1949. Within this framework, the article will assess the role played by the Ost-Ausschuss der Deutschen Wirtschaft (Eastern Committee of German Economy), a semi-official organization recognized by the West German government. Both the ability of German economic actors and China's urgent need for economic contact with the West caused German-Chinese trade relations to circumvent the strict non-recognition policy followed by the West German government. The article also argues that, while economic relations heralded official recognition of the People's Republic of China by other Western European countries, in the case of the Federal Republic of Germany a division between the two spheres was finally accepted by the major actors involved, and ended only after the change of attitude imparted by the Nixon presidency in the United States during the early 1970s.
