It soaked up 40% of the funds of the International Development Association (IDA), the soft-loan window of the World Bank. Today, India is as much a donor as a recipient. It is still a substantial aid recipient in gross terms. But the inflow is barely half-a-billion dollars net of debt service.

Africa’s abundant natural resources with technical expertise of India create a win-win situation for both. India and Africa shares common colonial history and method of liberation, following independence government of India is closely working with African countries to secure sustainable development. In 2016, South Africa supported India’s bid to membership in nuclear supply group.

Summary/Abstract For years, the common thread was the freedom struggle, with Mahatma Gandhi as a common inspirational link. Going forward, it is still important to unite against new attempts at exploitation, so they are not bullied into adopting unsustainable standards on issues like poverty alleviation or patents for generic drugs that India produces for Africa. It is this futuristic course that draws closer the ties between the African continent and the Indian subcontinent, described once by Nelson Mandela as ‘the golden thread woven in the common struggles against injustice and oppression’.
