During the closing years of the 20th century, the political landscape of South Asia was undergoing a tectonic shift. A decade ago, the barren lands of Afghanistan, had become the graveyard of the Soviet Empire. The disintegration of erstwhile USSR and its withdrawal from Afghanistan apparently ended the Cold War.
