While reviewing the literature on famines, Malancha Chakrabarty states that the work of scholars who criticise the assessment of famines as sudden collapses into mass starvation and stress underlying vulnerabilities is important because some countries are prone to recurrent droughts and resulting crop failures as well as international policies of denying food to civilian populations.
