| Summary/Abstract |
The year 2014 will be commemorated in the history of Southeast Asia in general and the Philippines in particular as the year marking the almostpenultimate step towards the finale of a protracted separatist movement in the southern island of Mindanao, since the “Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro” was signed in Manila in March. Conceived as a nationalist struggle, aimed at the establishment of an autonomous homeland for the thirteen ethno-linguistic groups comprising the Philippine Muslims (‘Moros’), the historical roots of this movement run deep into the labyrinths of the colonial era. As a dominant group with a five-century old civilizational heritage, the Moros account for about 20% of the entire population of the Philippines and were originally concentrated in the southern provinces of the country.

The problem of finding agreement on a universal definition on terrorism is, at this stage, more a political than a legal or semantic problem. In a way, more than two thirds of all Member States of the UN have already not accepted a common definition. The latest report on the UN web is of 2011. The progress is unsatisfactory. Members of various political hues are still divided over what could be the exact definition of terrorism. This diversity of opinion and multipolarity of the term itself are major reasons of disagreement.

The contemporary world is witnessing a lot of unrest as religious teachings are being misinterpreted and projecting a malicious image of different religions. Nonviolence, a great virtue that would enable us to live in peace is being relegated to the background and the religious sentiments coming to the fore in creating disorder. Various religions are being suffixed with terms such as terrorism and fundamentalism often giving an impression that these are some of the prime characteristics. No religion teaches violence; nor does it promote war. The very purpose of a religion is to guide an individual to lead a peaceful and disciplined life and engage in social good and set an exemplary model. Wars can never be holy. Wars wreak havoc and disorder.

Muslims, particularly clerics, should address such double standards in the treatment of women. It is only one of the jihadists’ many hypocrisies that they would promote outrage over the arrest of “their” women while simultaneously targeting “other” women for assassination and slavery. As women increasingly shift to a more active role in politics and conflict, some might consider this development an expression of greater agency. The overall picture suggests that these women continue to be used by men, both jihadists and those in government, to their own ends.

In the wake of Orlando attack by an ISIS affiliated terrorist in June 2016 in the US the Republican nominee Donald Trump asked the incumbent President Obama to term this event as an act of ‘Radical Islamic Terrorism’ or resign from the post of President. However, Obama neither resigned nor described this event in the manner desired by Trump. Instead, Obama termed this event as pure act of terrorism and argued that describing this event as motivated by radical Islam would give advantage of Islamic cover to terrorists.
