Enemy of my ally is not my enemy: : the ROK-US Alliance and ROK-Iran relations, 1978–1983 / Choi, Lyong ; Shin, Jong-dae   Journal Article
Lyong Choi and Jong-dae Shin Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract In this article we examine the exceptional case of South Korea's establishment of cooperative relations with Iran, despite the latter's confrontation with the United States, South Korea's closest ally, in the late 1970s and early 1980s. We discuss the conventional idea of the imbalanced relationship—the enemy of my ally is not my enemy—to explain South Korea's approach toward Iran, evaluate its past and current relations, and offer policy suggestions for the future relationship between the two countries. Using newly discovered archival resources and political records from South Korea, we provide a more exact picture of the international relations among South Korea, Iran, and the United States in the early 1980s.

Russia in Middle East: playing the long game? / Unnikrishnan, Nandan ; Purushothaman, Uma   Journal Article
Purushothaman, Uma Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract Russia has re-emerged as a major player in the Middle East once again, mainly because of its military intervention in the Syrian civil war in September 2015. This article throws light on Russia’s civilizational links with the region and what its aims in the region have been over the years, including the during Cold War. While Russia’s foreign policy towards the Middle East was passive in the tumultuous years following the fall of the Soviet Union, over the last few years, it has begun reorienting and recalibrating its policy towards the region. This article discusses Russia’s current aims in the region and its global ambitions, linking these to its intervention in the Syrian civil war, paying particular attention to the close ties that Russia has with Syria. This article attempts to explore whether Russia’s presence in the region is sustainable. It also explains the consequences of Russia’s intervention for the region and for Russia itself.

Understanding Resolution 2334:: did theOobama administration betray Israel at the UN? / Spoerl, Joseph S   Journal Article
Spoerl, Joseph S Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract Resolution 2334 in effect prejudges the outcome of negotiations on the crucial topics of borders, Jerusalem, and settlements. It does so in favor of the Palestinians, thereby circumventing and undermining the Oslo peace process that former U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry professed to protect and foster. The resolution rewards Palestinians for violating their commitment to negotiate directly with Israel and teaches them the (false) lesson that they can unilaterally impose their preferred outcome on Israel through international pressure. Therefore, Resolution 2334 removes the incentive for the Palestinians to return to bilateral negotiations with Israel.
