Between populists and conservatives / Ageyeva, Vera   Journal Article
Ageyeva, Vera Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract Wide-ranging discussions have only recently begun concerning the turn towards conservative values in Europe. In fact, one of the first signs of this change was the general election in the Netherlands in 2010, when the ultra-right People's Party for Freedom and Democracy won 24 seats in the Dutch parliament to become the third largest political force in the country. The right-wing trend gained momentum from 2014-2016: any vote in European countries added influence to forces whose rhetoric focused on strengthening the nation state, criticizing integration processes, and complaining about the globalization of all aspects of life.

Macron's victory as liberal revenge / Orlov, A   Journal Article
Orlov, A Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract SIX MONTHS filled with tension and keen apprehension of the "Trump effect" cropping up on the European soil separated two victories at the presidential elections: the victory of conservative Donald Trump in the United States and liberal Emmanuel Macron in France. The nation responded to the preliminary results of the second round in France announced on May 7 with barely concealed relief and a wave of unrestricted jubilation. The European multinational Liberal International that could barely tolerate Marine Le Pen's populist conservatism and the very similar values of the new American president treated Macron's victory as their common victory. Liberal politicians and the biggest European media of similar political and ideological convictions were lavish with words: L'heure de gloire pour la France, Merci La France! and La France dit Non! etc.

Populists and Referendums in Europe: dispelling the Myth / Gherghina, Sergiu ; Silagadze, Nanuli   Journal Article
Gherghina, Sergiu Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract Many researchers, journalists and politicians are inclined to connect populism and referendums. While in theory the two rest on similar principles, in practice this is not the case. This article shows that populist political elites make limited use of referendums compared both to their rhetoric and to non‐populists. Our findings indicate that the use of referendums is not a reflection of populist politics. They also illustrate how populists may initiate referendums strategically, and they win them quite often. The analysis draws on all sixty‐four national level referendums in Europe initiated by political elites between 2000 and 2019.
