French Nuclear Policy Towards Iran: From the Shah to the Islamic Republic / Therme, Clément   Journal Article
Therme, Clément Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract Since 2005, European and French foreign policy towards Iran have been caught between the change of Iran policy under Republican and Democrat administrations, on the one hand, and the Islamic Republic nuclear diplomacy on the other hand. To illustrate this argument, the article will provide a detailed history of Iranian-French relations, particularly pertaining to nuclear technology. The French discourse on a future nuclear Iranian threat reflects the dominant discourse within Western nuclear-weapon states on the nuclear ‘other’. Therefore, this article aims to shed light on the growing gap between France’s official nuclear ideology and the reality of internal and diplomatic developments of the Iranian nuclear program. I will deconstruct the official discourse produced in France on the Iranian quest for nuclear power to explore the complexity of the factors determining Iran’s nuclear choices and the conclusion of the 2015 Nuclear Deal.

Therme, Clément Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract This article sheds light on the converging interests between Iran and Russia in the Middle East as well as persistent points of friction between the two countries. There is an internal debate in Iran about defining a new regional and foreign policy in the aftermath of the Arab Spring and during the administration of United States president Donald Trump. As there are no purely bilateral relationships in the international system, the Tehran-Moscow relationship is, to a certain extent, influenced by US foreign policy.

Seizing Nuclear Tehran: Obstacles to Understanding Iranian Nuclear Activities / Therme, Clément ; Taha, Hebatalla; Egeland, Kjølv   Journal Article
Egeland, Kjølv Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract In this article, we interrogate some of the central assumptions in the literature on Iran's nuclear behavior, including the role of the United States as a benevolent hegemon, the revisionist character of the Iranian government, the utility and efficacy of sanctions, and the widespread assumption that Iran is bent on obtaining and even using the bomb. We maintain that contemporary debates on the Iranian nuclear issue display similarities to Kremlinology during the Cold War, being deeply politicized and subject to bias and self-censorship. We conclude by highlighting ways for scholars to recast the discussion.

Shiʿa Afghan community: between transnational links and internal hurdles / Therme, Clément   Journal Article
Therme, Clément Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract This article aims to present a political analysis of the relationship between the Shiʿa community in Afghanistan and the new political system that emerged after the US military intervention of 2001. In light of the sectarian conflicts in the greater Middle East and the connection between South West Asia and the Syrian war since 2011, this article illustrates the limits of the social empowerment of the Shiʿa communities in Afghanistan. The article outlines the internal religious scene and the connections between āyatollāhs (marājeʿ), mainly from Iran or Iraq, and Afghan Shiʿite believers. It also examines how the Afghan Shiʿite community differs from those of Iran and Iraq.
