Brexit Effect? Ethno-National Divisions on the Island of Ireland among Political Elites and the Youth / O'Connell, Barry; Medeiros, Mike   Journal Article
Medeiros, Mike Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract The status of Northern Ireland has been at the heart of the Brexit impasse. Using semi-structured interviews of political elites and an original survey experiment administered to young people on both sides of the Irish border (N = 771), this study analyzes Brexit’s impact on identities and territorial attachments on the island of Ireland. The results demonstrate that political elites perceived that Brexit had greatly exacerbated intergroup tensions; whereas the survey experiment only identified a significant influence of Brexit on territorial attachment in the Republic of Ireland, and no significant effect of Brexit on attitudes was measured in Northern Ireland.

Case for non-binary gender questions in surveys / Medeiros, Mike; Forest, Benjamin ; Ohberg, Patrik   Journal Article
Medeiros, Mike Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract LGBTQ activists and academics advocate the use of non-binary gender categories to include individuals who identify as neither rigidly male nor rigidly female to reflect the increasing number of people who do not place themselves in these two conventional classes. Although some general-population surveys have begun using non-binary gender questions, research has not examined the consequences of using (or not) a question with non-binary gender categories in surveys and censuses. Our study addresses this gap using a survey experiment in which respondents in the United States, Canada, and Sweden randomly received a binary or a non-binary gender question. We find no evidence of negative reactions to the non-binary question. Moreover, when there is a statistical difference, the reactions are positive. We thus conclude that general-population surveys could use a non-binary question without facing significant adverse reactions from respondents.

Refining the influence of language on national attachment: exploring linguistic threat perceptions in quebec / Medeiros, Mike   Journal Article
Medeiros, Mike Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract Fears related to a group's culture can negatively impact national attachment. This article brings new insight into minority groups’ national attachment by empirically exploring the influence of language threat perceptions on it. Quebec is used as a case because of its longstanding tensions with Canada. The results of the analyses not only demonstrate that perceiving French as threatened positively influences Quebecers’ support for independence and negatively impacts their feelings towards Canada, but the findings also permit the conclusion that it is an individual's linguistic perceptions that directly determine their national attachment rather than simply their linguistic group membership.
