Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Human-Machine Teaming / Praveen, G.   Journal Article
Praveen, G. Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract The battlefields of the future will be dynamic, chaotic, unpredictable, and uncertain. In such interlinked battlefields in multiple theatres and domains, commanders and staff would be sifting through multitude of data for information, decision, and feedback. In such a time-constrained operational environment obscured by Clausewitzian fog of war, effective and unbiased decision-making by leaders and cohesive, cogent actions by teams of humans and machines/systems will be enablers for succinct victory. The pace and complexity of decision-making is expected to reach a level beyond human cognition. Capabilities offered by latest and emerging technology will aid the decision-makers and troops in various domains even as there will be parallel battles to contest those domains by state and non-state actors. The famous OODA loop will have technology-assisted inputs at each stage of Observe, Orient, Decide and Act. Faster processing capabilities of Big Data and inferential analytics and seamless integration of inputs by algorithm-driven machines would simplify the complexities associated with the five Vs of Big Data, i.e., Volume, Velocity, Veracity, Value and Variety.

Emerging dynamics of warfare — role of artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics and how india can exploit it / Chowdhury, Manish   Journal Article
Chowdhury, Manish Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract Contemporary and future full-spectrum warfare would predictably be hybrid in nature, spanning into physical and conceptual dimensions — the former, a swift, intense and short-duration combat against an armed adversary and the latter, a sustained struggle for control and support of the domain of interest. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is fascinating as pursuit of machines to match human decision-making ability, albeit at a higher level of promptness and accuracy — both key components in tactical level of war fighting — hold vital promises for multi-dimensional warfare in fields of command and control, cyberspace, economic aggression, network centric operations, fail proof and predictive analysis of intelligence, deployment of autonomous unmanned platform, autonomous detection-acquisition-classification and engagement of targets, maintenance and upkeep of battle logistics and assets to name a few fields. This paper, while elaborating on conventional AI based force multipliers, also suggests futuristic unexplored application of AI to tilt the balance of power in own favour. The paper concludes with clear and non-utopian recommendation of future roadmaps, containing necessary change management and temporal action plan involving all stakeholders, to support India’s necessity to remain relevant in changing dynamics of warfare through development and deployment of AI and robotics.

Still ‘the human thing’? technology, human agency and the future of war / Coker, Christopher   Journal Article
Coker, Christopher Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract Is war beginning to escape human control? Thucydides tells us the war is one of the things that makes us definitively human; but how long will this continue to be the case as our relationship with technology continues to develop? Kenneth Waltz’s book Man, the State and War affords one way of answering that question. So too does Nikolaas Tinbergen’s framework for understanding human behaviour and Bruno Latour’s Actor–Network Theory (ANT). The main focus of this article is the extent to which we will diminish or enhance our own agency as human beings, especially when we come to share the planet with an intelligence higher than our own.
