GOI has been promoting demand driven PWSs for which Swajal guidelines have been issued recently. However, the country has a huge stock of PWSSs which have been established in a supply driven mode and now the responsibility of running those schemes are being handed over to the GPs.

Summary/Abstract To fulfil the Goal 6 of the SDG, India needs to pay much attention on security and safety of drinking water, optimal Operation & Maintenance, decentralization of management of piped water supply system with improved governance, surveillance of the water quality and strong community engagement. The goal is being fulfilled keeping in mind the climate change problem that is getting worse. This paper shows the inter linkage of relevant factors, which hang together and suggest a convergent approach for ensuring water security and safety through a scientific assessment with decentralized management and strong engagement of the people.
