How the Belt and Road Initiative Can Help Strengthen the Role of the SCO and Deepen China’s Cooperation with Russia and the Coun / Na-Xi, Lu   Journal Article
Na-Xi, Lu Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract China and Russia issued a joint statement on 8 May 2015 outlining the main approaches to linking the Silk Road Economic Belt (SREB) and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) projects. Both parties believe that to build the ‘Belt and Road’ project, it is necessary to use economic integration laws and actively enhance the role of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SOC) in stimulating regional economic cooperation, promoting construction of the SREB and linkage to and cooperation with the EAEU, creating a Free Trade Area (FTA) in the Asia-Pacific region (APR) and simultaneously begin creating a similar FTA among China, Russia and Central Asia to gradually stimulate interstate trade and promote regional economic development, actively developing—along with an improved model of energy cooperation—infrastructure and related industry and strengthening business contacts and jointly promoting construction of the SREB.

Perspectives of the Kyrgyz Republic on Eurasia / Nurmatov, Temirbek   Journal Article
Nurmatov, Temirbek Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract The Kyrgyz Republic was a co-founder of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), one of the first countries to sign the Collective Security Treaty (CST). Participation in the Treaty is a guarantee of its own security for Kyrgyzstan. The Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), becoming the culmination of the formal economic integration of Russia and Central Asian countries, set as its primary goal the creation of common regional markets for goods, services, capital and labour, which implies unrestricted freedom of trade and labour migration between member countries and unified customs procedures. The participation of Kyrgyzstan in the EAEU is a historically conditioned need for the revival and strengthening of trade and economic ties. Kyrgyzstan’s road, rail and air links mainly pass through the EEU countries.

Role of SCO in the Eurasian Continent / Yussupzhanovich, Ruslan Izimov   Journal Article
Yussupzhanovich, Ruslan Izimov Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract With an official accession of India and Pakistan to Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), its capacity has considerably increased. The organisation has also faced new challenges, to which the member states must respond rapidly. Thus, the expansion of the list of members blurs to a large extent the SCO area of efforts application. A traditional spotlight, shining for a long time on Central Asia, will be now inevitably shifted towards South Asia. The task of maintaining the basic principles of the SCO functioning and the balance of forces between the major and other members in the Organization, as well as the need for solving the most topical issue for today, the creation of mechanisms for financing the SCO projects, remain no less important in the light of the SCO expansion.

Russian–Chinese Cooperation in Central Asia and the Idea of Greater Eurasia / Lukin, Alexander   Journal Article
Lukin, Alexander Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract The author argues that Russian–Chinese rapprochement is a fundamental feature of the current changing system of international relations. Apart from its own significance, it has become important because it stimulated and, in some cases, laid the foundation for many broader international processes: the creation of the multipolar world, the emergence of such international groups and organisations as BRICS and Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), the coordination between Eurasian Economic Union and the Chinese initiative of Silk Road Economic Belt and others. Recently, all these processes led to the idea of Greater Eurasia or Eurasian partnership.

Tale of Many Roads: India’s Approach to Connectivity Projects in Eurasia / Purushothaman, Uma   Journal Article
Purushothaman, Uma Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract The Eurasian supercontinent has again assumed importance in world politics in the context of the declining power of the USA, the rise of India and China and Russia’s return to global geopolitics. At the same time, ‘connectivity’ has become the catchphrase in the supercontinent, thanks to China’s aggressive pushing of its Belt Road Initiative (BRI).  This article examines India’s approaches to connectivity projects in Eurasia, including those in its immediate neighbourhood. It argues that India’s approach to connectivity-related cooperation ideas in the region like the BRI is not uniform despite the economic advantages some of these projects offer. India appears to view such projects to a significant extent through the prism of geostrategic and security interests. Finally, it examines the implications of India’s approach to connectivity for India as well as the broader region.

Understanding Central Asia’s Security and Economic Interests / Joshi, Nirmala   Journal Article
Joshi, Nirmala Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract Central Asia has always been at the centre of global power play, due to its geographic location in the centre of Eurasia and its abundant natural resources that have attracted world attention. It has, however, been caught in the vortex of international politics. An interplay of globalisation, technology and geopolitics is evident in the evolving Eurasian politics. Connectivity projects, rail, road and energy pipelines are criss-crossing the region. Its geographical proximity to Afghanistan—part of its geopolitical space—impinges on its efforts to build peace and stability. Regional cooperation is gradually taking shape in Central Asia and holds the promise of their status as independent entities.
