GEOPOLITICAL constructs are a relatively new phenomenon in global political practice, and even today they are often created spontaneously. One of the most complex, contradictory, and ambiguous geopolitical constructs is the Indo-Pacific Region (IPR), or the Indo-Pacific, as it is known for short. It entered global political discourse in 2007, with the publication of an article by Gurpreet Khurana on sea lanes of the Indian and Pacific Oceans. According to some experts, the term "Indo-Pacific" has recently become a buzzword widely used by politicians and political analysts to show that they keep abreast of current trends, but it also helps perpetuate the Indo-Pacific idea

| Summary/Abstract |
The political crisis that unfolded in the Maldives in early February2018 threatened the current complicated system of international relations in the Indian Ocean region. For the first time in the brief history of the
Maldives, which until recently lay in India’s undisputed sphere of influence
and has no common border with China, the government in a time of domestic crisis turned not to New Delhi, but to Beijing. The author’s analysis of
the crisis, its causes, and its possible consequences helps clarify the motives
for the actions of the Indian and Chinese political elites, predict China and
India’s further steps in the Indian Ocean region, and understand the dynamic of future relations between Beijing and New Delhi.
