| Summary/Abstract |
Using panel data on Taiwan district court verdicts from 2000 through 2015, this study examines the impact of resource inequality on corruption litigation to determine whether court decisions are politically biased. Contrary to expectations, it appears that superior resources give defendants only a limited advantage in corruption trials in Taiwan.

Recent high-level visits between China and Vietnam have prioritized Vietnamese rice exports, with varying results. When the issue was first raised in 2015, rice exports surged dramatically. From 2016 through 2017, they performed poorly despite efforts to encourage them. This paper argues that the buying behavior and lobbying preferences of business groups, made possible by a unique institutional setup, explain the different results.

Starting from Xi Jinping’s political initiative the Chinese Dream, this paper examines its capitalist and nationalist discourse constructed through the nation’s disciplinary system, and seeks to unravel how it is enmeshed with business operations in mainland China. The paper argues that Taiwanese businesspersons play an ambiguous role in the dream as both “foreign” and “Chinese” investors.

This study takes a cultural approach to examine the unstable and contentious nature of Korean democracy. Analyzing an original nationwide survey conducted in 2015, we find that the democratic and participatory culture of the Korean people underlies Korean democracy. This finding suggests substantial tension between the participatory orientation of the public and Korean representative democracy.

China’s antagonistic stance toward the New Southbound Policy merely pushes Taiwan into the hands of Japan, China’s regional rival.

Marriage in Hindu communities is caste-endogamous. Any transgression leads to violence against the men and women who move toward inter-caste unions. A few inter-caste/interfaith couples manage to enter conjugality despite the familial and social pressures. This paper explores the caste and gender politics that operate within inter-caste marriages.
