| Summary/Abstract |
The decision of the Trump administration to withdraw from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA)—the carefully crafted July 2015 nuclear deal with Iran—has plunged the Middle East into a deep crisis. President Donald Trump’s May 2018 decision was followed by him imposing a series of unilateral sanctions against Iran. The limited waiver granted to a few countries including India and China were not extended in May 2019, thereby highlighting Washington’s decision to completely stop Tehran from exporting oil, the primary force behind the Iranian economy.

A decade is a reasonable timeframe for self-reflection, especially if it involves a new and ambitious venture. Though the Middle Eastern region is considerably important for India, scholarly attention has not been commensurate. One was hopeful that the tumultuous events of the Arab Spring, popular protests for change, and democratic aspirations would also get Middle Eastern studies in India out of deep slumber. Uncertainties of the authoritarian rulers, who mostly remained indifferent, if not insensitive, towards growing aspirations—we hoped—would also be felt among the Indian elite and generate a hunger for knowledge. These hopes came against the backdrop of the region’s neglect by the Indian elite and policy circles.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s sudden and unexpected announcement regarding Israeli settlements in the occupied territories not only runs counter to the international consensus but also overturns a bipartisan American policy since the June War of 1967. Arguing that American policy has been “inconsistent,” Mr Pompeo declared “The establishment of Israeli civilian settlements in the West Bank is not, per se, inconsistent with international law” and that the status of the settlements and that of the West Bank would be “for the Israelis and Palestinians to negotiate.”

| Summary/Abstract |
As part of the master’s course in the School of International Studies of Jawaharlal Nehru University, we study minorities in the Middle East. Whenever opportunities occur, we also engage with experts on ethnic minorities. A few years ago, we had a Druze official from the Israeli Embassy who spoke about the community, whose members live in the geographically contiguous Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria. He clarified our curiosity regarding their religious beliefs and social structure and the challenges in Israel.
