Summary/Abstract |
The New Year (Chunjie) came into being in China about four thousand years ago and, having experienced all and sundry vicissitudes of the historical process and political and economic reforms still survives at the beginning of the 21st century. All attempts of the authorities that be to overcome the desire of the people to mark Chunjie by the lunar calendar have failed. Popular customs have remained in the conditions of modernization and globalization, which confirms the conservatism of tradition as compared to the dynamism of the economic forms of life.

Summary/Abstract |
At the beginning of the Great Patriotic War most Soviet scholars went into the army or were evacuated from Moscow and Leningrad to faraway regions of the Soviet Union. During the war, Soviet Orientalists continued their research work in Moscow, Siberia and eastern regions of the country, and on Chinese territory, where Russian Sinologists were educated. In 1944, the activity of educational and research institutions in Moscow and Leningrad was completely restored, and Soviet Sinology continued its successful development.

Summary/Abstract |
This article is an attempt to explain the specific features of China's socially oriented policy at the beginning of the 21st century from the point of view of a systemic and functional analysis of the PRC political system. Despite the limited character of the existing democratic mechanisms in the country, the Chinese authorities demonstrate a sufficiently high level of responsiveness to the everyday needs of the population, which have become strained in the course of market reforms. The article presents an analysis disclosing certain transformation processes of the political regime of modern China.
