Abe Shinzō’s Lasting Impact: Proactive Contributions to Japan’s Security and Foreign Policies / Hornung, Jeffrey W   Journal Article
Hornung, Jeffrey W Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract Abe Shinzō’s long duration in office brought to Japan strategic vision, international respect, and a forward-leaning commitment to strengthen Japan’s defenses and uphold the major tenants of the international order. This article examines Abe’s achievements in the security and foreign policy domains. Specifically, it examines his domestic achievements in establishing the National Security Strategy and National Security Council, reinterpreting Japan’s ability to exercise its right to collective self-defense, passing a suite of security legislation, and strengthening of Japan’s Self-Defense Forces. It also examines Abe’s foreign policy achievements of increasing Japan’s international presence and global role, expanding Japans’ strategic ties, creating and exporting a strategic framing vision called the Free and Open Indo-Pacific, and helping to establish the grouping of four maritime democracies called the Quad. The article argues that Abe’s desire for Japan to play a larger, more proactive role helped leave Japan—and the region—in a stronger place.

Summary/Abstract How different was President Trump from previous presidents? This study first analyzes the routine activity of the president including signing legislation into law, veto action, presidential signing statements, and executive orders. The analysis shows that the activity by President Trump was not significantly different from his predecessor, President Obama. This study then turns to analysis of atypical behavior of President Trump and reveals that he deviated from the norms and practices of previous presidents. In particular, President Trump’s refusal to release his tax returns, use of the White House for the election, the appointment of “acting” cabinet members, the abuse of the power of amnesty, and the January 6, 2021 uprising at the U.S. Congress are discussed. At the conclusion of this article, the impact of Trump’s presidency will be examined.

Myanmar at a Crossroads / Ichiro, Fujisaki   Journal Article
Ichiro, Fujisaki Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract In this essay, the author remembers his first visit to Myanmar more than 25 years ago and discusses factors that influence the appointment or election of leaders. In Asia there are many incidences of female relatives who take over leadership positions following the removal or decline of their husband, father, or brother. Next, focusing on the opposition to the military regime in Myanmar, the author analyzes conditions for public protest movements to be successful. One condition is that the cause is worthy and the leader inspires the people. The other condition is that the pressure of international public opinion becomes so great that the regime is forced to give in. The essay concludes with suggested action by the international community for the situation in Myanmar to return to normal.

Presidency of Donald Trump and American Democracy: Populist Messages, Political Sectarianism, and Negative Partisanship / Masaru, Nishikawa   Journal Article
Masaru, Nishikawa Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract In this article, the following three subjects are identified: (1) as the quantitative evidence shows in the first section of this article, democracy in the US has deteriorated since 2016; (2) there could be multiple possible causes for the deterioration of American democracy. In particular, conjunctural opportunities give populist leaders an opening to project authoritarian schemes in the US against the backdrop of political sectarianism and the rise of negative partisanship; (3) the presidency of Donald Trump could be regarded as a cause of degradation of American democracy. Many of Trump’s traits and actions as president of the United States were damaging to American democracy. However, because Trumpism has not thoroughly permeated the Republican party, a barrier exists against further deterioration or even a transition to authoritarianism.

President Biden’s Desired Strategy for Engagement with China / Nobukatsu, Kanehara   Journal Article
Nobukatsu, Kanehara Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract China now poses the biggest strategic challenge to the West. The West needs a grand strategy to engage China. China will catch up with the US in economic size soon. Only when the West is united can the West prevent China from derailing itself from the path of responsible cooperation with the rest of the world. Hong Kong’s freedom was put to a sudden death. Next could be Taiwan. A contingency in Taiwan would cause tremendous damage in the region physically and globally in economic terms. In the coming decades, China will be driven by flamboyant expansionist ambitions and dark nationalism stemming from what they call 150 years of humiliation. Japan launched the Free and Open Indo-Pacific Vision. Japan also started a new framework called the Quad. Now the US is taking the lead. Strategic cooperation should be expanded to Europe, Korea, and ASEAN nations. At the same time, the US and its allies should revisit alliance management. Nuclear sharing in a NATO style should be now on the agenda.
