Asean outlook On the Indo-Pacific and skyrocketing US-Chinese tensions / Sumsky, V   Journal Article
Sumsky, V Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract For more than 10 years before that, the idea of the Indo-Pacific as a new regional configuration in the area of the Indian and Pacific Oceans to replace the Asia-Pacific Region construct had been bounced around at various international expert forums and in government circles of some countries, primarily the United States, Japan, Australia, and India. In 2007-2008, those four countries, which are more or less openly seeking to contain the growing economic and naval might of China, tried to create a quadrilateral group. They failed to establish any steady cooperation at that time, and for about the next 10 years, each of them sought to develop its own concept for a new regional formation while regularly attempting to coordinate positions with the other three in unofficial meetings on Indo-Pacific issues.

Brexit opens Pandora's box: what the separatists' victory means for Britain and Europe / Mikheyev, V   Journal Article
Mikheyev, V Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract IT IS FINISHED! Consummatum est! In the final hours of 2020, at the tail end of a nerve-racking blitz chess match, Great Britain and the EU finally managed to choke back at least some of their vitriol to reach a "divorce" settlement that was not too painful but by no means pretty. The agreement was signed on December 24. At a joint press-conference with EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in Brussels, the EU's chief negotiator Michel Barnier said with barely concealed satisfaction: "The clock is no longer ticking. Today is a day of relief."

Checkmate maduro" strategy as the basis for operation gideon / Strigunov, K. ; Manoilo, A   Journal Article
Manoilo, A Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract IN A previous article,1 we wrote that Venezuelan and possibly Cuban security services might have successfully thwarted Operation Gideon thanks to an information leak from the entourage of Juan Guaidó. On May 3, 2020, Venezuelan troops, security services, and civilians prevented a coup attempt by Venezuelan deserters and American mercenaries hired by the private military company Silvercorp USA, owned by Jordan Goudreau, who incidentally did not take part in that terrorist attack. Two American terrorist mercenaries, Luke Denman and Airan Berry, and at least 47 Venezuelan deserters were taken prisoner. We surmised at that time that the Venezuelan authorities had been tipped off about Operation Gideon by Cuban intelligence agents in the United States, mainly in Florida, where there are comparatively large Cuban and other Latin American immigrant communities. Guaidó had visited Florida accompanied by supporters, who might have a leaked the Operation Gideon plan either accidentally or deliberately, as there might have been people in Guaidó's entourage who had been recruited as agents by Caracas and/or Havana.

Closer look at the Russian foreign ministry's crisis management center / Syromolotov, O   Journal Article
Syromolotov, O Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract Question: Oleg Vladimirovich [Syromolotov], diplomacy is not an especially public topic, and what happens behind closed doors is kept particularly tightly under wraps. This is especially true when it comes to the international counterterrorism agenda, which you oversee for the Russian Foreign Ministry. It isn't often you meet with journalists, but every time you do, it is interesting, sometimes even fascinating. You work on specific matters that our readers are aware of, be it Syria, counterterrorist cooperation, or combating organized crime and drug trafficking.

Summary/Abstract WE OPEN this 11th Yalta international conference of the journal International Affairs. It is taking place during the COVID-19 pandemic. But since the situation has begun to normalize, we are able to gather here in Yalta, on the Black Sea, as usual, to discuss issues of integration in the post-Soviet space. Unfortunately, well-known circumstances both here and abroad relating to the pandemic have prevented participants from other countries from being here in person. But I hope that we will be able to communicate with them online, despite technical issues.

Globalization 2.0: what lies ahead? / Kortunov, A   Journal Article
Kortunov, A Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract HUMANITY is going through a painful process of deglobalization. Whetherthis process is inevitable or not (and if not, then who is responsible for it) is a matter of debate. In any case, the global financial crisis of 2008-2009 and the postcrisis period of 2010-2013 made it abundantly clear that globalization's linear development, to say nothing of its exponential development, is a thing of the past. Certain parameters of interconnection, such as international trade and direct foreign investment volumes, managed to recover by the middle of the 2010s, only to collapse once more at the end of that decade. Today, centrifugal processes have already gathered a lot of inertia. This means that those who expect that some single event (even a very significant one, such as Joe Biden taking office in the United States) may stem the process, let alone reverse it, are indulging in wishful thinking.

Impact of financial globalization on the formation of the European economic and monetary union / Kuznetsov, A ; Pishchik, V   Journal Article
Kuznetsov, A Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract IN THE context of financial globalization, international financial markets have had a strong impact on the traditional structure of corporate governance in Europe. This has manifested itself in, among other things, the strengthening of European companies' work with private investors, the recalibrating of income policy to reap short-term profits in capital markets, and the aligning of accounting practices with Anglo-American financial reporting standards [Höpner, 2003:67]. Of course, the scale and depth of this transformation has differed between northern and southern European countries on account of the distinctive features of the local business culture and differences between the socioeconomic development models practiced in these countries.

Taiwan: the bone of strategic contention between China and the US / Zakharov, V   Journal Article
Zakharov, V Journal Article
0 Rating(s) & 0 Review(s)
Summary/Abstract THE WORLD is accustomed to perceiving the Taiwan problem exclusively within the context of Sino-American relations and the well-established claim that "Taiwan is an integral part of the People's Republic of China." However, that inertia is deceptive, especially today. Against the backdrop of a sharp escalation of the confrontation between Beijing and Washington, the growth of the PRC's economic, political, and military power and, accordingly, the determination of the US to retain military and strategic superiority in the eastern Asia-Pacific region and the world as a whole, the resolution of the Taiwan issue is becoming increasingly uncompromising.

And it is fundamentally important today, when major changes in the global situation, triggered this time by the coronavirus pandemic, have made it an urgent task for international actors to develop the most rational approaches to the new challenges and to ensure national interests in the new situation.
