| Summary/Abstract |
This article deals with the philosophical foundations and historical consequences of two influential political concepts in the Far East: New Celestial Empire and Asia as Method. The author shows that politics in the Far East have been traditionally based on the categories of the Void and Transformation, which gave rise to a specific type of Utopian consciousness with its motif of universal co-being within the encompassing yet singular event. The New Celestial Empire concept reflects global aspirations of the PRC, taking into consideration local specifics. The concept of Asia as Method aims at decolonization and deimperialization in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and is popular in Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. The author examines the confrontation between these theories and suggests ways for their possible integration.

| Summary/Abstract |
This article considers the main trends and features of Chinese studies in India for the first time in Russia's scientific literature. The author provides reasons for the high level of activity among Indian Sinologists, describes the leading centers of Chinese studies in India, and analyzes the main forms of such studies. They include regular weekly seminars, lectures by foreign Sinologists, annual nationwide conferences, and special forums on China supported by the K. Adenauer Foundation. This article considers the topics of analyses and occasional reports published in the journal China Report and describes the most important Indian monographs on China published in recent years. The author analyzes works by Srikanth Kondapalli, a leading Indian Sinologist, as a concrete example, along with his approach to Indian-Chinese relations. This article shows the meager attention Indian researchers give to Russian-Chinese relations.

| Summary/Abstract |
China is one of the world's largest manufacturers, exporters, foreign investors, and consumer markets. In recent years, the country's economy has been influenced by domestic and foreign factors, the transformation of the world economy, and trade wars with the United States. A new coronavirus pandemic that would spread gradually around the world began at the start of 2020, designated as the target year to finish creating a comprehensive moderate prosperity society (xiaokang shehui) in China, victory over poverty, and the end of the 13th Five-Year Plan period (2016-2020). This massive event would greatly impact the lives of people and the economy of such a densely populated and economically powerful country as China. This article considers the degree to which the new disease affected the development of the economy of its leading economic center, Guangdong Province, in 2020.

This article is concerned with innovative and structural transformations of the Military-Industrial Complex (MIC) of the PRC and their connection with the process of civil-military integration aimed at creating an innovative system of science and technology in the country, combining military and civilian resources to increase the capacity of the MIC to produce high-tech weapons and next generation military equipment, and at the same time, bring innovative changes to the civilian sector of the economy. In the author's view, there is a trend to increase R&D funding in the PRC, as well as to take measures to use artificial intelligence to achieve the designated goals.

This article deals with specific features in the development of frontier infrastructure on the Mongolian-Chinese border. Noting the fast development of foreign trade relations between Mongolia and China, the authors examine changes taking place in the frontier area. They focus on the current system of checkpoints and also on the prospects for opening new border crossings, in connection primarily with the export of mineral resources.
The research was carried out under the direction of the Buryat Scientific Center of the RAS SB and the Baikal Institute of Nature Management of the RAS SB.

| Summary/Abstract |
China's long-term power engineering development plans, which assume an increased role for nonfossil energy resources, and the midterm decline in oil consumption due to the coronavirus pandemic, raise questions about the role of China's oil industry and Russia's role as a key oil exporter to China. The authors analyze long-, medium-, and short-term trends in China's oil production, refining, and consumption, using current data from primary sources, and conclude that China's oil industry will recover its oil consumption and imports in the medium term. In the long term, despite the transition to green energy, the role and volume of oil consumption will grow until 2035 and then stabilize by 2050. This will create favorable conditions for Russia as one of the main suppliers of oil to the Chinese market. But at the same time, it will intensify competition between the world oil producers.

| Summary/Abstract |
This article deals with cooperation between the U.S.S.R. and China in the field of railroad transportation in the 1950s-1960s using the example of freight traffic via Grodekovo station, Khabarovsk Territory, and Zabaikalsk station, Chita Region. The role of Far Eastern and Trans-Baikal Railroads in the U.S.S.R.-China transportation corridor is shown. The author uses statistical data from the State Archives of Khabarovsk and Primorye Territories to confirm the conclusions made earlier by researchers concerning the Soviet-Chinese transportation system in Transbaikalia. Both sides of the transit by rail freightage (U.S.S.R. and PRC) needed raw materials and mutually complemented each other. The author notes the work of international supervisory bodies - meetings of representatives of railroads and foreign trade organizations of socialist countries of Southeast Asia - to coordinate the plans of export-import cargo transportation.

| Summary/Abstract |
This article analyzes the advisability of transforming the partnership relations between Russia and China into an alliance with an emphasis on the military aspect of their cooperation. The author considers points testifying to the inadvisability and irrationality of concluding such an alliance in the context of today's global situation, where a new world order has yet to form conclusively. With regard to the alliance between the Soviet Union and China of the 1950s and '60s, the author concludes that one of the factors leading to its breakup at that time was the Soviet leadership failing to understand items associated with the history of Chinese civilization that would allow the creation of a specific Chinese "psychotype." This eventually became the main reason for the incompatibility of the national mentalities in the Soviet Union and China, affecting the durability of the two countries' alliance in the middle of the 20th century. The author uses data from Chinese experts to emphasize the predominance in Chinese academic circles of the opinion that it is better to maintain a strategic partnership between the two countries, and there is no need to transform it into an alliance.

This article reveals the specifics and scale of Russia's cooperation with China, Japan, and South Korea in the commercial development of the Arctic in such areas as development of the resource base in the Arctic Zone of the Russian Federation and the infrastructure of the Northern Sea Route as Russia's globally competitive national transportation corridor. It focuses on identifying major factors constraining the development of Arctic cooperation between Russia and Northeast Asian countries.

The author studies the structure and dynamics of trade between South Korea and Central Asia from 2000 to 2019. The existing trade turnover is unbalanced with an outdated trade structure: South Korean exports of manufactured goods predominate in mutual trade flows, while Central Asia main exports are primary commodities and raw materials. The Central Asian republics' low involvement in global value chains is the main reason for the existing inefficient trade and greatly hinders the development of investment cooperation. The implementation of reforms by Central Asian countries will contribute to the development of other trade areas and economic relations, while promoting diversification of the structure of trade with South Korea.

The role of Taiwan in the growing US and Japanese conflict with China for influence in the Asia-Pacific region is a highly relevant topic. This article notes that Washington and Tokyo intend to continue hindering Taiwan's reunification with Mainland China, which would greatly strengthen Beijing's position in the Pacific Ocean. Under the administration of President Donald Trump, the United States notably stepped up its support for Taiwan, in both expanding its official ties with Taipei and supplying it with American arms. The policy devised by Washington and Tokyo (and coordinated with Taipei) to strengthen the de facto independence of Taiwan is gradually taking shape. Beijing has made it clear that it will do whatever is necessary to maintain China's territorial integrity within its official concept of One Country, Two Systems.

This article analyzes process of Christianization in Taiwan and in Greater China. The reasons for its intensity change in different periods, compared to similar processes in Southeast Asia (Singapore). The authors examine aspects of the Taiwanization and Sinofication of Christianity, along with the choice of languages for Christian masses. They consider long-term problems of relations between Mainland China and the Vatican that inevitably concern Taiwan, as well as the prospect of the emergence of a "catacomb" Catholic Church in Hong Kong.
