The main reason behind the deterioration of relations was the technology war, which was launched by the Trump administration against China. At the centre of the U.S.-China stand-off was the Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei, which was leading the world in the 5G telecommunications. This article provides a background to Huawei and identifies the reasons for its meteoric rise. It further looks at the decade long effort by the U.S. government to thwart Huawei’s attempts to enter the U.S. market. Lastly, it charts out the measures taken by both the Trump and Biden administrations in the U.S. to scuttle Huawei’s 5G deployment.
